Hi All
Last night I let Angus the Westie out into the garden for a run and "natural" break. He suddenly took-off and dashed to where our cars were parked and then ran around the garden. It was then I noticed he had an object in his mouth. At first I thought he had got hold of a hedgehog that lives in the garden, but when he dropped it I found it was fairly large brown rat & was very dead. One of our cats was out in the garden prior to Angus going out and my initial thought was the she had killed the rat and Angus had only picked it up. However my better half says that the cat could never have killed a rat of that size, although she has been known to kill mice (the cat not my better half ;-) ).
So could Angus find and kill a rat in under 30 seconds?
Regards
John

Hi Michelled
Yes it was. Both Angus and the cat were in clsoe proximity which is why we couldn't determine who the culprit was.

Well I'm impressed at the speed he dispatched it. No wonder he was looking pleased with himself during the evening.

Yep, he could :)
My Tamino does kill mice (the cats bring them in for him  ). I timed him once at 8.6 seconds to catch and kill one.

But I ended up almost crying afterwards. :(

Thats why I pick the cats up and leave Tam to it. Or if I see the cats with one I bring Tam to them. Otherwise the poor thing would be tortured for a long time. :(

Killing rats sound great but beware. I had a Rough Collie several years ago and she died. This was due to a large infestation of rats in the area and people using poison to kill the rats but it also killed my beautifull girl.
I had a very small cat that used to regularly bring home dead rats for me. :( Yuck. If the cat has the instinct they will kill. Though this sounds like the terrier got it ;)

When I was little we had a pembroke corgi who used to work with our cat to despatch rats and mice :) it was amzing how they worked together, the cat guiding them in for the dog to despatch :) perhaps this is what your did ;)
When i was a little girl, i used to love ratting with my two jack russells. We lived well in the country side and the rats used to bother my rabbits all the time. I know it might sound horrible but i loved it, my dogs were in there ellement. loved it.
Oh and there was also the time when my parents said i could keep two pet mice, only if i got two of the same sex. Well i got a male and female of course and they started to breed in no time. before i knew it the shed was full of them, and by this time i dare not tell my parents what i had done. But they did work it out eventually when the house also got full of them, but the dogs came in very handy. What a horrible child i was.
