I have just come back from helping my friend mate her dogs. I will put as much detail in as possible to help you, so excuse me if it gets a bit graphic. The dog mounted the bitch OK but was a bit far away so I held her legs to pull her a bit closer. Because I was doing this she could not move away, (this may be important.) Anyway when they were closer they connected and proceeded to have a 20 minute tie. She made a lot of noise but we have mated them twice before a few days earlier and she did this then as well. All going well? Well we thought so until they parted. After a while I noticed a brown stain between her anus and vulva and my friend had the most awful thought. Was it possible that the pair of them had anal sex? I know the tie is a mutual thing between the male swelling and the vaginal muscles contstricting but would it be possible? If so this has been a wasted mating. Like I said because I was pulling her towards him she could not really move away. she has been trying to get at him all day and has been reluctant to go out to have a poo but she did do after she was mated. Could this have caused the stain although she isn't at all loose. He is a fair bit taller than her as well. Help.

my guess would be her anal glands went, did you notice a fishy smell at all,--and i dont think if it had been anal sex you would of got a tie---i wouldnt worry too much, espescially as they tied

cheers Dizzy, Well there certainly was a vile smell that was not there in the previous matings. I would not have said it was fishy but it was not a pooy smell either, it was just horrible. We were holding them both because they tend to wriggle in the tie which makes her squeal so she could not have got away if she wanted to. I know the vaginal muscles play a big part in the tie and I wouldn't have thought it would happen with the anus but I don't know, i am not experienced enough. she is very obedient and if owner was holding her ( as she was) I think she would have accepted anything.

What a horrible subject!:p
I should think it was the anal glands. I have had this
happen to my own bitch. One bitch was a terror for
spraying her glands if she got over excited when in
season. Actually it seems to excite the dog into a
frenzy if they smell it. They always make noise when
being mated. Some more than others. Do not worry
I am sure it was not as you suspected.

I know of a dog who used to mate his kennel mate (male) so its possible and tie!!!! I DO NOT ever force matings its not right no matter how desperate you are to breed and forced matings tend to result in disaster
much ncer if they can mate naturally

You do realise that once dogs have tied they should turn....don't you?

some breeds and certain breeders dont allow their dogs to turn. they keep them on top of the poor bitch the whole way through.

Just thought I would add a bit more info to help. They did turn on the tie Sarah and were back to back. Does this help anyones decision as to what happened? Mattie, it was not a forced mating, I think you must be picking up on thefact that I had to get him a bit closer. Both dogs were very eager and quite willing to mate, it was just that he persisted in standing too far away and was getting really flustrated, so we parted them for a while and tried again. He still was missing by about 3 or 4 inches and the bitch was falling over with the weight of him while he kept trying. the other two matings between them happened instantly and we had no problems. So I had to hold her legs and draw her nearer to him which worked instantly and they connected....but to what?

If they turned then I would have said you had a correct :D mating and not and interesting one <grin>, as the 'tie' is the clamping of the bitches muscles and this wouldn't have happened if in the incorrect place (I'm trying to be delicate)
I would assume that one of the above answers was correct, (Dizzy's) that it was the glands for some reason

Hi there, not ALL breeds turn when mated.Irish Wolfhounds dont, the males front legs are both put one side of the bitch, and they stand side by side during the tie, not with the dogs weight on the bitch all the time.

This is what I would have thought Sarah, until Mattie came on with the two male dogs tying...God, what a thought

!!!! I have been back tonight but she is not at all interested even though he is still as mad as hell. she is geting very nasty with him so we have left it and will have to hope. Mind you if he did get it wrong last night no wonder she is nasty:D I wonder when the two two males tied, if they turned back to back. Hope Mattie comes back on. This sort of thing has never occured to me before. I have mated dogs and bred a litter but I wonder just how common this sort of thing is. You just don't think to look do you? :o. Come on Mattie, did the two males turn?

Of course it's better when they mate naturally, but sometimes they need some help.

Just a thought but was it a long tie. I ask because I was help with a bitch whom tied for over an hour.. when they finaly parted the first thing the bitch did was go for a poo!!!!!!!
We put the long tie down to the fact that she must have been desperate to go{although she was allowed before the mating to go but was more interested in sex :) }
On the subject of turning I have found that sometimes the male decided to turn half way through the mating ,BORED maybe or just wanted a change in posture.
I hope it was a succesfull mating!!

It was a 20 minute tie, Emma. He turned fairly quickly after a minute and then they tied for 20 mins. I'm hopeful she had already conceived. They mated on day 13 and 14, successfully I hope, it was a 20 minute tie on both both occasions and then there was that one last night, day 16 which I don't know about. I wouldn't have questioned it at all if it hadn't been for that stain. What do you think her odds are folks?

The only dog I knew who went in for male relationships <grin> I don't know enough about to say if he tied or not...I don't think he did
I think your odds on two 20 minute ties are faily high, but is it a proven stud & a bitch who has had pups? If yes then they are even higher, if one or both is a virgin, then the odds are lower. Fingers crossed anyway :)

Well I know she hasn't had pups before, not sure about his experience. But they were both good easy matings. My friend expects me to have all the answers because I have bred the one litter but I don't think anyone can. I did remember something last night but I was too tired to type. when she released her glands, which I think she did, it was during the tie. If he was in the wrong hole( puttting this nicely) how would the gland fluid seep out when he had swelled to make an almost airtight block. I also remember he was clean when he separated, there was none of this vile stuff in his hair near the tip of his penis yet she was covered. I know he washed himself but he couldn't have got all of it off, we had to wash her throughly. After I had smelt the stuff (urghh) I went and sniffed at him (urghh again) and he was completely free of it. Does this point to him actually being in the right place? I know we can't do anything about it but Kay (my friend) would be happier with 3 mating as opposed to 2 and I am intrigued now and would like to get to the bottom of it....oops, excuse the pun. Actually I did that deliberately, might raise a smile early on in the morning.:-)

I'm sorry--but have been in stitches reading this one!! really, you don't need to worry--the dog went where he should of, and the brown stains will have been the anal glands opening. This happens. the only worry would have been if he got it on his penis then pulled it back in, because of infection for him. But if you couldnt smell it, I would guess its ok.
Just relax, and start counting the days!!

It makes me laugh as well Sarah Jayne but I have to keep a straight face in front of Kay. She does not find it amusing at what her dogs may or may not have been up to. :o :D
