I'm a bit staggered, as I posted on the "cough" thread, that the vet gave me Rimadyl for a very mild case of kennel cough, which is probably nearly over anyway, that he didn't mention anything about possible side effects, and that 5 tablets cost £58.15!! What do I do now? I haven't given any to Luke, but if I decide not to use them, would the vet's reimburse me?

If you haven't opened the packet, then they will hopefully reimburse you.

It's a bottle. I've rung them to discuss it and they think I may have been charged for 5 bottles rather than 5 tablets !!! I'm waiting for the nurse to ring back.

You definitly have not been charged for 5 bottles! (not even one bottle - I think I pay around £70 for a 100 )  I would hope your vet would reimburse you if you return the packet unopened.

They are dear but not that much !

Can I just clarify - I have 5 tablets in one bottle - which at £58.15 works out at £5.80 a tablet - the other point is I'm not sure that they're really necessary for a very mild case of kennel cough in a perfectly happy dog. If he was in any sort of distress, that would be a different matter, but in the circumstances I'm not sure if the benefits are worth any possible risk from side effects.

5 tablets for that price works out at £11.63 per tablet ...

:o   just demonstrating I haven't got the razor sharp brain of my 97yr old sister-in-law!
Anyway, would any of you use Rimodyl for mild kennel cough?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.11.04 19:03 UTC
Personally, no. I'd use it for other things, but not that.
- By Val [gb] Date 24.11.04 20:58 UTC
No, but then I wouldn't give antibiotics either unless the dog was very old or very young and likely to get a secondary infection.  As kennel cough is a virus .................
But then you can't charge much for doing nothing, can you?  I wonder how many clients would have actually questioned the charge?

we've only been prescribed rimadyl for strains and pains
- By Sandie [gb] Date 24.11.04 22:46 UTC
I paid £18 for 2 weeks supply of rimadyl for my dog when he had surgery and he had 3 a day so you have been charged way over the top.
I dont think they will be any good for kennel cough they are more for joint inflamation or at least I though they were.

Personally I would keep well away from Rimadyl. Far too many serious side effects for my liking. I've never heard of it being prescribed for kennel cough though - very worrying.

I can provide one incidence of a side effect of Rimadyl - my bitch is still alive :)  She has arthritis and I was on the point of considering having her pts because of the pain
- By carene [gb] Date 25.11.04 09:14 UTC
As I posted above, I've now been refunded £50 so I'll leave it at that - I won't use the Rimadyl but obviously if it had been prescribed for something like arthritis that would have been an entirely different matter.
