I have a lovely 19 week old long haired chihuahua, who is such a brilliant dog. The thing is, he is my first dog and even though I have read books about chihuahuas till they are coming out of my ears, I would like to know whether it is normal for my dog to be sleeping just like a baby? He just loves lying on me and sleeping for a good part of the day (when I have the time!), thankfully he shows no signs of distress when I am not in the room etc but should he be so comfy sleeping like this or am I pandering to something I shouldnt be? By the way, I forgot to mention he did break his front leg four weeks ago but still manages to run around when the cat walks by. Can anyone advise me? I am treating him like a dog and not a baby before anyone says this but I just need a bit of reassurance that all is well. thanks

If you watch a litter of puppies, or a family pack, they will often lie over one another - it helps conserve body heat, and the one at the bottom is often the 'pack leader' ;)

Thanks, that makes me feel so much better and that we're heading in the right direction.:-)
Puppies do tend to sleep a lot, my retriever was asleep more than she was awake at 8 weeks. She certainly makes up for that now, but both of mine still prefer to drape themselves over me when they snooze. (And they aren't particularly small!)

Thanks LucyandMeg, I think I will count myself lucky for having a little doggie when it comes to sleepy times! ;-)

I generally have two four year old working springers draped over me or upside down on me sleeping like babies, they liked to be tickled under their arms as well.

I have a 14 week old chihuahua girl called Grace there is nothing better she like than cuddling up and drapeing herself accross my tummy and flipping over backwards with her feet on her tummy

I have never owned a chihuahua, but I did see a vet show once which featured a puppy chichuahua which slept a lot (I mean a lot!). It turned out owner was only feeding the pup twice a day which was not enough and the poor thing ran out of energy and that's why it was constantly sleeping. Puppies usually sleep a lot but if you think it is sleeping far too much maybe check with your vet and check his feeding schedule. Hope everything goes well.

Thanks for that advice. :-)
I know what you are saying but I find it very hard to make him eat more times a day, I did mention it to my Vet and he was satisfied with Baileys eating schedule, so maybe I just have a sleepy dog at the moment. He is getting more active now though and I'm starting to see 'signs' of teenagerhood! So I think the fun is just starting!!! Thanks again x

Try having 3 fully grown setters lying over you also with a large cat!!!!! (even my cats larger then your chihuahua!!!) :D

I know what you mean! I have a cat too and they normally sit on my knee together, but at least its not big dogs + cat, you must be a very good animal parent! ;-)
