The latest addition to our family is a Dobermann, currently 10 weeks old. He is getting on fine in all respects BUT unlike my Dalmatian who was as quiet as a mouse when a puppy (and still is), he is VERY vocal. There does not seem to be any reason behind it either ie hunger, toilet etc.
Quite a lot of it is at various intervals during the night and very early in the morning. He has somewhere to go to the loo and a nice warm bed and his cage is next to the other dogs bed. But the noise (barking and whining ) is terrible. It wakes the whole house and the neighbours?

We usually ignore it and after half an hour it stops.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

maybe he doesn't want to go to the loo in his cage (even if there is a separate area). He'll probably grow out of it tho, mine did by about 12 weeks.

Maybe he is lonely.   When puppies leave their mother and siblings they can get very, very lonely.   Isolation can be very stressful, even though there is another dog around.   Move the crate into your room to start with and then move it out after he is more settled with you.

The poor puppy may have worn himself out with stress and gone into what is known as 'learned helplessness'.

Hi Paula

Welcome to the world of Dobermann ownership - they can be very chatty/noisy dogs.

I would suggest leaving a radio playing quietly (talk not music station) to see if that helps settle him down and blocks out any external noises that may be disturbing him.  It might also be that your Dalmation (please assure me that this is a bitch) wanders around during the night and disturbs him so try putting them in separate rooms for a few nights to see if this helps

Thanks for that. Surprisingly the past two nights he's been very quiet. But he does like the radio when he's been stressed in the car on the way to the vets, so we will give that a try. And YES!! My dalmatian is a bitch!! They seem to get on very well, apart from the size difference, as Rosie is too boistterous at the mo for the Dobie. Time will tell..
