my 14 month old english bull terrier is hyperactive and when people come over to visit he totally goes over the top jumping and just wont leave people alone, he's fine around me and my 3 children, its just other people. I have been advised to change his diet as I was feeding him Bakers Complete which i was told had too much less protein (17 percent). Has anyone got any advice to offer it would be appreciated.

I would think its probably not the protien in Bakers that getting him hyped up but the colourings and additives. Dogs do not need pretty colour food...thats done for our benefit.
I would try changing him onto a diet without all the additives.Maybe Burns or if you want a food you can buy from the supermarket try Autarky.
17% protien is not high...if anything its one of the lower %ages. Most complete foods for adults have 20-21% protien

Perhaps more to the point - have the owners taken any steps to maintain any kind of regime? Most Bullies I've known have been on the 'busy' side anyway - they are people dogs and it seems to be in their nature rather than any degree of 'hyper'activity.
17 % seems extremely low, i'm sure bakers is higher than this, as i changed from bakers to burns for that very reason. Burns is 18.5%. If a dog were truely hyperactive he would be mad all the time, but you say that he is ok with the family, so i presume it is just exciteability around visitors. This isn't unusual for a 14 month old of any breed.
Your Bull Terrier sounds very much like mine. He is well trained around the family but as soon as as there are visitors he goes absolutely mad with exitement, it is fairly typical of the breed and people either love them for this or it is just too much. I do sympathise and I'm sure you dog is causing embarrassment with people thinking that you have unruly dog. I tried all sorts of socialising classes, arranged for people to regularly call around and completely ignor the dog but in the end we had him neutered and now at 30 months he has started to calm down. I dont think it has anything to do with food, because we feed our dog on all different types of food because of this theory, none of which made a blind bit of difference, we now feed him on James Wellbeloved
Bull Terriers are extremely frustrating dogs to own, on the one hand they are extremely loving but on the other hand they can be so difficult to train you sometimes wonder if it is worth the effort. I'd say if you have no plans to breed from him, have him neutered and in time he will grow out of his crazy phase and you should then realise it was worth the effort.

I had this problem too! A change in diet may be a good Idea, My dog was on Bakers and was a complete head case. I now feed him Aurtky(sp) and I could tell a difference more or less straight away. When People come into the house ,have the dog on a lead, and ask your vistors to totally agnore your dog.Once he has calmed down let someone give him a treat, but not fuss the dog to much. I dont know if this is the best way to do it.but it worked for me. Also if you dont already some training class would'nt be a bad idea! Good luck.
