Hoping for some advice! My mum and dad lost their old irish setter Councillor a few months ago, but shortly before he died my mum took some photos of him. Last week she finally plucked up the courage to get them developed at our local photo shop, but when she picked them up the next day there had been an apparent mix up. Her film along with 5 others had been sent away (we thought the films were developed on site as you can see the girls using the photo developing machine) and developed into slides rather than photo's. The wrong sort of development has meant the photo's they managed to get by some digital method (don't realy understand all of it!) are in black and white. Now while we do have some lovely photo's of phoebe, the photo's of Councillor are awful. A black and white photo of a red setter on a green sofa just don't work. We can get more photo's of phoebe, but no more of councillor these were the last ones taken. They did give my mum the photo's and a cd of them for nothing, but claim there is nothing more they can do. My mum is so upset, i just want one of the photo's of councillor sorted for her. Any suggestions??

I've asked my OH about this and he believes that they would first have had to develop the film normally and transfer to slide, so what happened to the negatives? and why are the slides in B+W? This sounds like one massive c**k up  I can only imagine how distressing this is for your mum, and hope you can salvage some photos. Even if they are adamant that nothing can be done it would be worth contacting someone really high up in the company, its remarkable how things can change when you do this. Last week my mum in law got some photos back which were supposed to be completely lost, after contacting someone high up in the company and stressing how important the photos were (people who have since died) - lo and behold, the photos turned up ;)
I've done a search on the web and found a Photo forum, someone on there should be able to help

Sorry I can't give any more info as I don't have the knowledge :(

Thanks for the advice, i'll give the photo forum a go to see if they can offer any suggestions. Unfortunately this is not a chain of shops, so there isn't any one higher we can talk to. The owner let the girl do all the apologising, then at the end just said he thought they looked better in black and white! Granted some of the photo's of my daughter are lovely, but the important ones of councillor are just awful.

From what you have said, if they have developed a print film in transparency developer then they have ruined the film. The two types of film are totally different and use totally different chemicals in the development of the image. I really don't think there is anything that can be done now which will correct the film, it is irrevocably ruined.
I'm so sorry that it had to be one which is irreplaceable such as this one. You may be able to argue for some compensation but really, there is no compensation which could make up for a loss such as this.

It may still be a good idea to try the photography forum, Erin has a CD of the 'slides' and they may be able to advise about salvaging something digitally.
