Hi. Ive used this forum before to gain valuble advice when i had my dogs.I would like someones help and advice for a friend. They have a rottweiler ( unsure of age) who is very aggressive when its meal time. They make the dog sit and wait for its food, and give the command to eat, BUT, as soon as the dog starts eating, it growls if anyone goes near it, and its fur stands on end. An example was when the lady went to walk past the dog to go into the living room, it growled at her and seemed very aggressive. Any advice would be great as they are at there wits end. Thanks in advance :-)
There are various methods to condition the dog to enjoy people near its food including hand feeding for a while, and using several bowls and adding food, but much depends on home set up, and so on. Some dogs can also have medical conditions which may make them aggressive over certain things although it isn't of course, always the case but it is wise to bear this in mind in case. It does need careful handling because someone who doesn't know what they are doing could make things worse. You probably need the help of a good trainer or behaviourist who can also give some back up. Was the dog a rescue? as some can be very protective of food esp. if they have been deprived earlier in life. Try www.apbc.org.uk for a start.
