Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Tripe...frozen or fresh??
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 22.11.04 12:26 UTC
Hi all,

I can only get hold of fresh unfrozen green tripe, pretty much straight from the cow
You guys seem to be the conisuers of green tripe,it is virtually unknown here in Australia :(

My Q is: Would it be advisable to freeze it first to kill any germs or bacteria that may be present or is it o.k to feed it fresh?
The guy that i'm buying it off of refuses to mince it as he doesnt want it touching his human grade mince, altho i dont get why he cant just do it at the end of the day before he cleans his mincing machine???? Therefore i am forced to slice and mince it myself, which is gonna take alot of stomach and breath holding from me,mmm mmm fresh steaming green tripe.....cant wait,NOT!! Ahh The things we do for our dogs, but they're so worth it :D
He's charging 4 bucks per kilo and i have to buy a minimum of 2 kilo, this is going to take me all day and night to mince up!

I'm a vego,i cant believe i am now handling slabs of raw liver and all sorts of innards and bloody meat and bones and tomorrow i will have a cows stomach sitting on my kitchen bench! To all of you vego's who wont feed raw coz of the meat handling aspect,if i can do it anyone can ;)

Look forward to your replies,

Christine

Hi, I usually get a large black bin bag full of green tripe from my butcher, the whole belly unsliced, it takes two of us to carry it to and from car. I slice it and freeze in freezer bags in quantities for one meal for each dog. I dont mince it and my dogs love to rip it and eat it as it comes. As far as I know it is ok to feed fresh and unfrozen as I have given my dogs some before chucking in the freezer.

I wish I could get hold of unminced fresh green tripe.  You are very lucky.   Dogs don't need their meat minced, cut off what the dog needs for one meal and let him sort it.  BTW freezing does not kill all germs.

He's given me a choice of lamb or beef tripe,i'm sure i heard somewhere that lamb tripe carries more parasites,is this true? Has anyone tried lamb tripe, did your dogs like it as well as beef??

Lamb tripe is said to harbour more parasites, ie worms, but i fail to see how it is possible.  I have only ever fed my dogs beef tripe, they love it, i have never tried them with the lamb.

Hi Christine

I get the same when I can - often warm!

Why mince it - dogs are quite capable of chewing it up themselves :D ?

I cut it into approximately meal sized pieces and generally get 15 - 25 per tripe depending on it size

Due to the EEC/Defra rules I am not allowed to bring it indoors (but can bring minced tripe that you can buy ready frozen inside) so I cut it up in the garage (as it also has to be undercover in case any birds take a bit away and drop it in a field where it can be eaten by a cow and thus circulating any diseases that may be attached!!)
