Hi All,
My 2 are coming up for worming again and the vet has suggested using Milbemax this time. Have any of you used this wormer before? I have never heard of it.
I normally use Drontal, as Panacur and the others always upset my big boys stomach. Ella is ok on any but he seems to have an adversion to anything other than Drontal.(we call him iron guts as nothing upsets him, apart from wormers) Although they are not showing any signs/symptoms of worms I will do it anyway to be on the safe side.
After using the chemical wormer I intend to use the Four Seasons herbal/homeopathic treatment on a monthly basis as I
hate putting chemicals into them. I also dose them with garlic everyday, they now have been free of fleas for months, albeit I have a supply of Frontline in just in case. :)
I have not heard of it. Just got back from having Libbys boosters done and the Vet has given her Drontal again, which I'm pleased about as Panacur really upset her stomach, and I would be wary of trying anything new....but thats just me :)

personally i would not use milbemax. I have tried it and it didnt suit my dogs. I use drontal and have never had a problem (touch wood)
I use the four seasons wormer cos I too hate pumping chemicals into them, also it works as a preventative whereas others only work when you use them, they could pick up worms the next day. Mine often got worms as we do agility at an equestrian centre and the boys have a lovely habit of snacking on horse poo! Mmmmm nice. Since I have been using four seasons (approx. 4 months) they haven't had them once.
Regards, Claire

Thank you for that :) I'll use the Drontal on this occasion.
I use milbemax personally, as you only need one medium sized tablet for a medium to large dog instead of the usual 3 drontal. I work at a vets and am usually the one dispensing womers and find milbemax is easier and suits more dogs as a lot are sick on drontal. It covers all worms just like drontal, but is quite a new type so this may be why you haven't heard of it before. Both the vets and nurses are prescribing it more too.

Hi Lucyandmeg, yes, the vet said that I would only need one Milbemax tablet for Murf at a cost of £9.50, he weighs 45 kilos, I presume this is correct. Because Drontal is the only wormer that has agreed with him I am cautious in changing. :)

Hi Hairypooch, When i tried milbemax i was told each tablet was for 25 kilo so you would need 2 tablets (unless they do a bigger one now) and i did both my dogs (1 tablet each) for around £7.00 As i said it did not suit my dogs not for sickness but they actually got worms after the second dosage i give them every 3 months and i never had any problems with drontal so IMO if your not having any problems with drontal i wouldnt change. How much do you pay for drontal? My previous vet charged double what my current vets do for the same product

Also you can get it at chemists that sell animal medicenes. I pay £3.50 per tablet and imo milbemax is only a few pence cheeper.

Drontal is £1.77 per tablet from Vetmedic. (One tablet per 10kg)

Hi Sonny,
I pay £2.50 per tablet for Drontal. But JG, that is a very good price from Vetmedic at £1.77 per tab, I will probably buy them from there. My vets are one of the most expensive in our area and they are not as good as my old vet, who retired a few years back, So I tend to tread with caution when dealing with them as they are good at racking up the bill
I have bought Drontal tablets that do upto 30kgs from ONE tablet. (Mind you it still took me nearly all morning to get Saffy to swallow it!!!!) I will have to check where from (use lots of internet sites and usually buy in bulk).
Interesting point that they could get worms the day after taking the tablet - never really thought of that before.

I use all there products for my dog and she is fine.
Happy as can be.
But did you now the wykken site has closed.
New one at http://Folklore.Directory4Shopping.co.uk or they have an ebay shop as well.
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Folklore-Products.
The thing with these sites is that I can use my credit card and spread the cost.
What ever happened to cash.?
Hi Alexis, no didn`t know it had closed, thanks for that :)
I do have the telephone no. tho hope it still works but will copy those sites just in case! :D
Cash...whats that??

Hi Hairypooch
I used Milbemax on my girl last time, and it was the first time she didn't suffer from any adverse reactions at all :D
However, if you key 'Milbemax' into the 'search' function you may find some 'adverse reactions' to the actual company who produces this drug - which is making me think a little?

It's a shame that vetmedic now charge postage on wormer which they didn't used to do, thereby raising the price by £2 per order.
I have thought of buying the larger packs and avoiding the postage but I guess there is no guarantee of shelf-life.

I only bought some on Thursday (arrived Saturday) and there was no P&P. Mind you, I did buy a dozen, but the price was £1.77 each. (The expiry date is November 2006.)
Hi
I recently posted on the board re worms.
I have a 20mth tibetan terrier-wormed in Sept with Milbemax, he got worms literally 2 weeks later, re-wormed him again on vets advise with Milbemax after 1 week there were still worms in his No2's!
Asked advice on here recommended Drontal, which I bought online from Wormers.co.uk.(very reasonable quick delivery) he has been wormed with drontal, no side effects & no more worms thank god!
Hope this helps.
I have heard from various sources that Milbemax is possibly unsuitable for collie breeds.
Found this on the Mibemax site hope it helps:
______________________________________________
Special Precautions and Warnings
Studies with milbemycin oxime indicate that the margin of safety in certain dogs of Collie or related breeds is less than in other breeds. In these dogs, the recommended dose should be strictly observed.
The tolerance of MILBEMAX in young puppies from these breeds has not been investigated.
During treatment with MILBEMAX, no other macrocyclic lactones should be administered.
___________________________
The other contraindications are:
___________________________
The product should be administered with or after some food.
Treatment of dogs with a high number of circulating microfilariae can sometimes lead to the appearance of hypersensitivity reactions, such as pale mucous membranes, vomiting, trembling, laboured breathing or excessive salivation. These reactions are associated with the release of proteins from dead or dying microfilariae and are not a direct toxic effect of the product. The use in dogs suffering from microfilaremia is thus not recommended.

Like most things this is probably something your vet may not mention when you buy them and it is worth knowing in case your dogs shows the above symptoms.

Hi Yes LD Milbemex is from the same family of drugs as Ivermectin which can prove fatal to collies. Gillian
Yes I have used millebex, my dog didnt like it and was sick with it, so stick with Drontal, no problems, also get them from Vet-medic.
Its quite new to the market, as you dont need as many if you have a large dog, ok so if like me you have a 35kg dog so need 3.5 tabs of Drontal, and if you also have a dog like mine who dosent like taking them, cheat, and put something nice around them usually does the trick..:)
