my pup has been so ill,not eating or drinking, sleeping constantly and a runny nose,at the first sign he wasn't right we took him to the vets and hes been on metacam and synulox for four days,he's due back there on fri(he went sat,sun and mon for injections and checks)they think he has a lung infection but i don't feel right about it,not sure why ,he's made a little progress is eating and drinking a little,he was also shaking and tremoring when asleep and i think i've made a connection that was hard to notice before and thats when he trys to make the effort to have wee or get up to eat hes walking with his back slightly arched and although its not obvious looks a bit uncomfortable on his back legs(no one else has noticed)but they look abit pulled under him after being on his feet for a minute or two thats when the shaking starts and he would rather sit and doze before he lays down to sleep and then shakes for the first hour of being asleep.i haven't left him at all and have slept on the floor with him,(he wont come in my bed )vet looked at his legs said they're fine but i just feel so uneasy, please can some one give me any advice or suggestions as to whether it could be a wrong diagnosis

Why not go to a different vet and get a second opinion? You are obviously extremely worried and a second opinion may well set your mind at rest, or may provide a different diagnosis and treatment. Do not worry about offending your original vet - the health of your puppy is far more important.

The shaking you describe happens when a dog has a really high temperature, which a lung infection can cause. The dog will be lethargic and sleep a lot due to the high temperature. The arching of the back and tucking of the legs under the dog indicate he is experiencing some form of pain which sounds to me as though he is aching, rather like when we get flu. Another reason and possibly more likely one, he might arch his back like this is because he is not eating properly, and some breeders will say he looks "tucked up", meaning his belly is empty and he is feeling achy, like we can when we get very hungry. Typical symptoms of a dog with a high temperature are lethargy, sleeping lots, not eating or drinking and shaking or trembling.

It does sound to me like a lung infection or form of kennel cough, which my own dog had as a puppy, at the end of last year. Have you told your vet about the arching of his back? Vets mostly only see our pets when they are ill so don't know what they look like when they are well.

Most vets are happy to answer any questions an owner asks, but like most people even the most caring go with a million questions to ask and end up leaving having missed asking some vital question or indeed having forgotten to mention a change of symptoms. I usually suggest to owners to have ready a list of questions and symptoms to take to the vets with you then you have a "prompt" so that nothing is missed or forgotten.

To add to Polly's list of high temperature symptoms - drinking lots (and lots) with the result of having to wee a lot.  This was one of my lad's symptoms last week with his high temp.

If it is a lung infection then this should be readily audible though the stethascope but if you are still concerned then take him back.

I have found that arching of the back (or standing like a stallion does when it wees) is often caused by stomach problems although in your pups case it could be because it opens out his lungs and helps him breath.  (take a deep breath curled up and then stretched out to see what I am getting at)

Do you have a digital camera - can you get a picture printed of the way he stands that concerns you that you can show your vet?

Has your vet given you any panacur for lungworms?  One of my puppy buyers was in a very similar situation a few yrs back and it turned out the dog had lungworms which gave the same symptoms as pneumonia and a whole in the heart neither of which she had but like your dog she had temp, shakes, lots of coughing with lots of flem (sp?) and sleeping loads off her food, they even kept her in on a drip did lung biopsy and heart scans when all she needed was a 7 day course of panacur which they did give her after the lung biopsy and endoscopy as a precaution he told her.
