Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / pup wont stand up?
- By guest [gb] Date 28.04.02 06:52 UTC
One of the pups in the litter that we are hoping to have one from wont stand up like its litter mates. Its teeth have not come through also. What has caused this and also will it catch up with the others?
The other pups are looking good ,strong and healthy and we are about to pay the full wack for one.It is not going to be breed from and wont be shown, just a family pet.Would you advice us to carry on or leave well alone
any help greatly appreciated(sp?) thanks

Think I would be a bit worried too, did you ask the breeders opinion? If it was the smallest or has had a setback it may well catch up. It may have a hole in the soft pallet which will meen it may be unable to feed properly. I would ask the breeder for some sort of explanation for it's being behind the others.

Sounds to me like the puppy needs some extra calcium. I dont think I would be concerned about buying another puppy from this litter, sometimes there is one in a litter that has problems - but as long as the puppy you are interested in has a full set of gnashers and is lively and strong it may not put me off. After all, the puppy may have died soon after birth, instead of surviving and then all you would have seen was a healthy litter of the remaining puppies. May be worth speaking to your own vet about it and seewhat he/she thinks.

What age are the pups, as this one may just be a day or two behind others.

If there is no intention of breeding and the pup you choose is healthy. then if all else seems right, Mum healthy and breeders other dogs living to ripe old age then I wouldn't worry. I would though have it checked by a vet staraight away, and return it if it is not up to standard for a healthy puppy of its age!

Could it be a Swimmer? these pups make no effort to stand and their legs tend to lie each side of their body. They can be helped to stand by a support, bringing the legs together into a proper posistion but I do beiieve they suffer from respiratory problems later.

What breed is it first of all?
The thing that would worry me most about this situation, is that why is the breeder seemingly not doing something about it & so what does it say about the breeder?
