i am getting a huskie i understand these dogs are not advised to be let off a lead,so what would be acceptable method of exercise for example, how many walks a day,and how far should each walk be as i understand they need plenty of exercise,

I own sled dogs, larger than huskies but my babies get a short walk before I have my morning cuppa, a 4-5 mile walk midday, a short walk at tea time and another quickie before bed. I don't feel bad about missing short walks but they always get one long walk each day. I'm lucky that I enjoy walking and see it as my quiet time away from the hassles of family life, it keeps my backside from expanding and I love to see the dogs enjoying a good sniff. I vary the walks, sometimes we're in the country, sometimes the beach and sometimes the woods.  People often comment on my top boys gait and his leg/foot structure at shows saying you can see he is well exercised.
I think the dogs indoor behaviour is a good reflection of the amount of exercise required, I'd say if the husky is content indoors he/she is receiving ample exercise otherwise all that excess energy would be getting burned up indoors.
I'm lucky that having more than one dog they play alot tiring eachother out, I have private enclosed land if I want to let them have a good romp off the lead, hubbie is a fitness freak so he can run the hell out of any dog who enjoys it, I use 3metre Hi-Control Boss Leads that can be shortened or lengthened to suit.

If it is a puppy you are getting they should not be getting too much exercise too early...it is bad for their bones.
A rule of thumb is 5 minutes exercise for each month of life...ie a 3 month old pup=15 minutes

Sorry Archer that was thoughtless of me. My dogs weren't able to do much as pups as they are quite large. We built slowly up to a mile between 10wks-12mths and then went for it.

I have Malamutes and stick with the 5 minute rule per month for onlead walking but allow offlead running as well :)
