Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Muscle tone on pup?
- By Guest [gb] Date 16.11.04 12:58 UTC
At our rinngcraft I was told that my pup (whose almost 6 months old) has little muscle tone and that he's very 'soft'. They also said he needs to tighten up in front. Can anyone give me some tips on how to achieve this as I'm cautious not to over do his exercise. He gets a 30 minute walk in the morning, and a 25 minute walk in the evening. Both walks are on woodland trails and fields - I don't do terribly much roadwork (as we don't live near a road) but I do try and do at least 3 road walks per week.

Many Thanks

It would help if we knew what breed he was?  As over doing the exercise with some breeds especially Mastiffs can lead to problems :)

At 6 months old I would NOT try to put muscle onto a pup.Give him time and gentle exercise as you are and don't worry.I would be very concerned if a 6 month old pup was built up muscle wise. I have a 9 month old pup who needs to strengthen behind but I know it will come in time...I have no intention of forcing things

Guest,

At six months he's a baby :) he still has lots of growing to do :)  as all babies grow at different rates so will your pup, he will not be 'finished' until he's finished growing so is bound to need a 'bit more' here and there :)  please don't worry about it and enjoy him for what he is right now - a baby.  :D

However if you do want to muscle him up the best exercise for a puppy is in the hydo bath if there is one local to you 20min 2 x's a week is pleanty - and will not harm his joints.
