Hi
Please can you help I am really worried about my little lab pup. She is now 6 months old and is on her third course of Synulox antibiotics for her constant weeing.
It started when she was around 3 months old when she was still needing to go out every hour. I took her to the vet who prescribed antibiotics.
Since that time and since moving to a new vet she had a urine test done which showed a mild infection and was put on the antibiotics again. The vet thinks it is a mild cystitis. The infection cleared for a few days but then began again. I took her back to the vet with another urine sample and she also had blood tests done. The blood tests were all fine and negative but the urine still showed not 100 percent clear. So yet again she is on the antibiotics for another 10 days. She has been on them now for a few days and I can not see any change. She needs to go out to wee every 3 hours and when we are out she wees in the park and on the pavement every 10 mins or so.
She also drinks absolutely tons of water around 6 bowls a day.
I really don't want to have her on antibiotics forever and wonder whether anybody else has experienced this problem with their dogs and if so what did you do? Are there perhaps any natural remedies to help this and by 6 months of age how often should then be wanting to go out to wee surely she should be able to hold it longer than 3 hours???
I must add that at night she is fine and sleeps right through from 10.30pm - 8:30am!!!!
I did wonder if it could be something to do with her food she is on Eukanuba puppy for large breeds perhaps it is too salty but I just don't know.
Any advice would be so very gratefully appreciated
Thank you
Vanessa

http://b-naturals.com/Sep2004.phpthis may help; I certainly would never feed a diet that included added salt; it is just as bad for dogs as it is for their owners! :)
Sometimes dogs that do have a UTI (and I am not suggesting that your dog necessarily has) are put on the wrong antibiotic and/or taken off too soon.
HTH

Our Lab puppy also drank lots of water and was weeing every half hour or so,however i think this is usual when fed on dried food, or when the pup is young,Annie started on pedigree proffesional, then we slowly introduced butchers puppy tins and puppy mixer, she stopped drinking as much, and stopped weeing as much, we have always fed our dogs on tins and never had any problems, they have all lived to a very good age also people often ask me what i feed them, as they have beautiful shiney coats.By the way royal canine has a complete food only for labs.

Hi, have you told your vet that your pup is drinking so much or just said that she is weeing very frequently? If not your vet may not have looked for possible causes of the problem apart from cystitis. Six bowls of water a day is a massive amount for a lab puppy and I'd want that investigated fully.

Hi
Thank you for your help.
Jas - I have told the vet about the drinking I noticed it in fact from when she was very young. I am starting to wonder whether to go for a second opinion about it.
Having read the link above that was sent - Thank you Tohme I am wondering whether to request that she has a urine culture done also and will call the vet now about it.

The trouble is with the complete dry food dogs need loads of water.
I would consider changing her to a different diet.
I had big problems with Annie she is one this week but a nightmare up to about 7 months old especially as she wee'd and messed in the house the only lab Ive had in twenty odd years to do so.
hope you get her sorted out dont like the idea of all the antibiotics

Hi Mattie
I am so sorry you had problems with Annie. It is a difficult thing to deal with I really don't know what to do for the best. Like you I also don't like the idea of the antibiotics and am considering changing her diet but I just don't know what to go for. I was seriously considering Burns but was then told yesterday by the teacher of her training class that it was not good and a "filler/bulk" food. They suggested the American brands such as Purina or Fromms (which I know nothing about at all). What food is Annie on and is there one in particular that you can recommend that is good for labs??????
Tomorrow I am taking Desi in for a urine culture I am not looking forward to her having this procedure but hopefully after there might be a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.
What did you do with Annie to stop the weeing?
Best wishes
Vanessa

Hi agian,
Like you she had tests but were fine as I wanted to show her but ended up not I kept her on dry complete pedigree but only a small amount twice a day and she also has meat I always give my dogs meat fresh or canned. also they love brown bread crusts or slices if I open a loaf they get one.
gradually she out grew the problem.
hope you sort her out ist such a worry isnt it?

Hi Thanks Mattie
It is a worry and I hope it will be sorted out. I will let the vet do the urine culture tomorrow and see what comes up in 8 days time.
I hope she will be ok.
I am so grateful to everybody on the board for their help and advice though.

Hi goat,
Burns = filler/bulk food?? Obviously the trainer has no experience of it ;) admittedly it doesn't have the no of ingredients of Purina/Fromm but it certainly isn't a 'filler' in fact many brands are bringing out their own versions of Burns ;) - no 'derivatives', colourings, preservatives, etc. :)
If you do a search on the web you'll soon be able to make comparisons ;)
Hi guys,
(Dill, I quite agree with you. I specifically chose Burns as it didn't have all the fillers in it! I'd like to ask the instructor how they think that it has a filler in it, as its not in the list of ingredients!)
I would suggest that if you are using a complete dry food, that you soak it in warm water for about 10 minutes before giving it to the pup. As it won't be as dry, the excessive drinking should slow down.
Good luck
Ali :)

Burns is an excellent food and, IMHO, a lot better quality than Purina or Fromm!
Perhaps your teacher needs to elaborate on what she considers fillers!

Has your vet made mention that your young pup may have ureter problems? The pups excessive drinking may be the result of something more sinister, has your vet performed blood tests? Have you asked your pups breeder if any other female pup in the litter has been having problems?
