Came in from work tonight and was busy sorting out the dogs so didnt go in the living room, OH got home and of course being male went straight into the living room to watch TV ( ) he called me in with "er come and look at this"  ... "what?" says I, thinking its some cr@p on tv ... "its a big mouse" he says so I go in and whats sat up on top of my snakes vivarium but a young rat  grim, rodents I can take but wild rats scare me :(  It was obviously the rat that the cats had bought in the day before, they had stood vigil either side of the sofa all night, then a dead rat appeared in the hallway so we assumed it was that.  Anyway, this baby rat just sat there quite nonchalent (and quite oblivious that he was sat on top of a hungary snakes house :p ) there was no way I was going to touch it, so I picked up the nearest cat and sat him next to it .... cat looked at rat, rat looked at cat, cat went to pick up rat, rat squealed, cat jumped back and they continued to stare at eachother.  I had my OH stood there going "doooo sommmeeethinggggg" (obviously he was worried about missing neighbours  ) so I got my snake feeding tongs and picked it up by the scruff and chucked it out the window  (the rat that is, not the cat - alhthough that was tempting :D :D )

So what now ?  my beloved cats are a year old and have only just started bringing in large prey ie. rats and partridges.  We could handle sharing the house with the odd mouse or shrew but rats are grim, unfortunately the cats bring them in to play with or quite often for the dog to play with so it isnt often they kill them :(  My OH is all for keeping the cat flap shut when we are out but I dont think that is fair, and the idea of the cat flap is for the cats to get in when we are out.  We keep most doors shut when we are out but the kitchen/study/hallway dont have doors.  I just wish they would learn to kill stuff or leave it outside :(

Don't you just love cats!! We had a black tom cat(Barney) when I was a child. He bought home untold treasures...always live...from rats, mice and voles to peoples pet guinea pigs, budgies and rabbits! We never knew what we were going to come down to running/flying round the living room in the morning! Made life VERY interesting at times.

No bless him, he isnt big enough to deal with a rat and to be honest I dont know if he would know what to do with something that is live

ooohhh nasty!

Something to get used to I'm afraid with cats! I have 5 and during the summer months I have an assortment of "presents" such as voles, shrews, mice, birds and rabbits brought back to me. Mostly my presents are headless! Nice!
