Topic Dog Boards / General / do all dogs stink or is it just mine
- By morganalfie [gb] Date 15.11.04 17:26 UTC
Woody stinks, the house stinks, I think i stink, and the rest of the family.

Woody is brilliant, we all love him to bits, but I'm sorry he stinks.

Do all dogs stink, just labs or just woody. Is this common, is it something i have to learn to get used to.

I'm sat here at my pc, and i have a waft of something up my nose.

It aint poo or pee, it is just a dog smell. He has already had a bath, cause he pooed in his crate and got it all over him about 10 days ago. We got advice from the local groomer, who said we could bath him so we did.

He smelt lovely then, I've cleaned the house, I've spent a fortune on air freshners, but no the smell is still there.

Short of freezing everyone to death, with doors and windows open for a few hours I dont have any suggestions left.

Or put simply do i need a peg, for my nose.

Please ALL comments gratefully recieved, ps i can handle dirt and mucky floors etc, cause they can be cleaned. but the smell LOL

Help

Alix,

If the smell is fishy, it's anal glands.  Tartar build up causes bad breath. Ruling those two sources out, some dogs do smell more than others.  I am sure to people that do not own dogs they all have a slight smell.

My Cairn that I got about 12 weeks ago really smelled like a "kennel dog."  I gave him a bath but it was about a month before he lost his "pong".   I changed his food as well to what I was feeding my other dog.  That might have had an effect - it really cut down on the really strong odour of his poo.

Abby used to really smell she would stink out the entire house, when we changed vets he picked up on it straight away turns out that she is allergic to some protein in her food.

It also depends on the breed, some are more smelly then others.  Has he a beard, that can get very smelly if it is not washed daily.  You can get a spray from Plush Puppy called Odour Muncher which I have found very good inbetween baths.

I have to say I bath mine often, as I don't like the smell in the house.

My retrievers are a bit prone to rolling in all manner of stinky things so they generally pong after every walk! I find a regular wash and brush up is great for keeping smells at bay. If you brush your dog daily, never a bad thing anyway as it gets the dog used to being handled, use a sweet smelling grooming spray, and brush it through his coat. I don't know if they still do it or not but Beechams used to make a spray called Canovel which was very good for getting rid of dodgy doggy smells.
If the dog rolls in fox poo, scrape of as much as you can with dried grass, then I rub soft earth on the coat, until I get the dog home. Once home I use tomato sauce to get rid of the foxy smell.

I think it must have something to do with the breeds too.  I have a big hairy dog who I virtually never bath and she doesn't smell, whereas my sister has smaller (but still hairy) dogs which smell to me even after a bath!  She does feed hers different food, so I am going to test whether it is food or something else - I have put my dog on the same food as my sister feeds hers (Saffy has a bit itchy skin lately so I wanted to change her diet to see if that was the problem anyway).  I will see what happens.

Baby wipes, if it is a short haired breed...gives a lovely shinny coat too!....makes them smell like a baby!

Depends how sensitivwe you are, my Dad thinks they stink if he has to have them in the car.  I think he would throw up with the avergage Springer.

I have a Northern breed who are purported to have little or no doggy odour.  Yet as far as my non doggy relatives are concerned the hous, and I stink of dog, and  when they have had the dog in the car my Dad has the window open and moans about the smell of the dog.  god help him if it were a Spaniel or other wiffy breed!

Some people are just very sensitive to smells.  Most things have a smell, just depends if you find i8t unpleasnat.  some people love the smell of incense stick and Lillies.  The smell of Lillies makes me feal il, but the smell of Horses I think is wonderful, and your average clean dog smell doesn't bother me one jot.  Much better than the bedroom my brothers have slept in in the mornings!

Hi

Thanks for all your replies, Woody is 10 weeks tomorrow, and a lab, after posting this message on another board, I'm actually coming to the conclusion that it is either a puppy smell, or something to do with his food. Although he is still on the same that we bought off the breeder arden grange, junior dog food. As we got a bif bag to last us, As i did not really want to change his tried and tested diet. Having said that, he has done a very sloppy poo this morning. Normally they are nice and firm etc (nice subject LOL). I'm gonna have to see how he gets on for the rest of day, and if he does it again, try starving him for a bit. Which wont be an easy task. As boy does he like his food. But he is back at the vets on friday, for 2nd jab, micro etc. So will probably mention it then

Puppoes do have a very characteristic smell, especially their breath.  Now some people really like this puppy smell and have said if only you could bottle puppy breath.  Myself I find it a slightly unpleasnat odor, but they do gradully loose it.  You may be overfeeding him if his poos are loose, or he may be loose if you have recently wormed him or had his jabs.  Babies often have a bit of looseness aqnd be out of sorts after jabs, and pups are no diferent.

Be very careful not to let your Lab puppy get fat, as dieting a puppy is not a good idea, and they are heavy dogs prone to weight gain and hence problems with hips etc.

A puppy should be covered, but the ribs should be easily felt,a nd you should be able to see a waist, especially when pup is eating or drinking.  Labs will always tell you they are hungry :D
