Topic Dog Boards / Health / Incontinent GSD, some help please?
- By Enfielrotts [eu] Date 15.11.04 11:35 UTC
Hi, I have a GSD that is now 11 years old and is trying to live her life gracefully!  The trouble is she has recently shown signs of being incontinent!  When she gets up there is a wet patch on her bed, and she is also leaving puddles around the house when she has full access to the garden via a flap - she has always been clean!
Does anyone know of any remedies that could help her control this leaking as she has been to the vets quite a bit just recently and I would like to keep things natural but also want to help her as she tends to panic when she has an accident bless her!

It is also a little bit of a pain cleaning up after her as its not just on her bed that she has theses accidents, its also on carpet so as you can imagine can become smelly! :(

I have had old dogs before but they have not suffered with this, therefore I am at a bit of a loose end thinking of things that can help!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

Kelly

Propalin, available from the vet, is supposed to be helpful for this.

Kelly,

Old dogs of either sex can become incontinent.   When one of my GSDs reached 12 she become incontinent as well, but mostly with her bowels.  I had dog flaps too, but she rarely made it outside in time.

I would have her checked by the vet.  She could have a urinary track infection or something else not necessarily related to old age.  If it is old age then sometimes female hormone tablets from the vet help.

Otherwise, you may need to keep her confined to a carpetless area or find or fashion some "doggie diapers" for her.

Hi Stacey, thanks for that - I decided I will take her to the vets, as you say it could be an infection but to be honest I do think its age so I will see what the vet has to say and go from there, although I think she would like some fancy knickers:)
