my staffie boy is 10 months old and has just mated his first bitch he has a lot of  CH in his ped and the bitch owner hopes to get a good litter but a friend who breeds dogs says this is too young as the bitch is only 13 months and on her first season does this mean there will be no pups?
- By cooper [gb] Date 13.11.04 13:55 UTC
no ..she will produce if she and the dog are fertile.
the person that told you probably means she is too young to be bred by a responsible owner.

The birtch is certianly too young for a litter - she's still a puppy herself! Generally bitches are mated on their third season, as long as it is after her second birthday. Of course you have clear eye certificates for both dog and bitch?

No, it doesnt mean there will be no pups, but it means that the bitch is too young to have them. A bitch should not be mated on her first season and it would seem that neither you nor the bitches owner have done enough homework to be considering breeding. Ten months is also, to my mind, very young to put a dog to his first bitch. Have your dog and the bitch had all the necessary health checks for the breed? Certainly they havent been hip scored, though I do not know whether that is recommended for Staffys. Have you checked both sets of papers to see whether there are restrictions on registering puppies? Did either or both of you sign contracts when you bought your dogs and if so have you checked whether there are restrictions to breeding? Have you studied both pedigrees to ensure that the lines are compatible? Does your dog compliment the bitch and are you sure at this young age that both are good enough physically and temperemnt wise to breed from?

How irresponsible and thoughtless of both of you!

Totally agree with archer. My god 13months!  She is still a puppy herself.  So  sad.

Well the mating has already taken place so if there are puppies try and get your breeder friend to give you as much advice and help that they can.Read up on the subject and help the bitches owners as much as you can,get them to read up on it too as it will be their bitch doing all the hard work.

Completely agree with Archer - jeez.................  both of them are only puppy's themselves!! :-(

Perhaps it is not too late to take the bitch to a Vet to have the pregnancy terminated, that would be the responsible thing to do.
- By Fillis Date 14.11.04 15:17 UTC
Yes it would be the responsible thing, but...the guest only seemed to be concerned that "too young" means there may be no puppies, not that the bitch may have problems!

Was looking through the BRS the other day and noticed alot of bitches were having puppies at 14mths. Worries me a great deal that the moment they turn 12mths they are mated. And there was one bitch who was three years old and had had four litters already!

What is the minimum age in the breed club code of ethics?
- By Carla Date 15.11.04 17:07 UTC
I looked into this before I think and I don't think there is one.... but I could be wrong.
- By gwenstaff [gb] Date 15.11.04 17:14 UTC
I think in  most of the breed club code its 18 months. and i know a lot of clubs stipulate that a bitch should have no more than 4 litters.Personally i wouldnt breed from a bitch younger than 18 months and i often wait till they are older as somes bitch`s mature later than others. I also sell my puppies with ristrictions on their pedigrees. and i will only lift the ristrictions after they have been eye tested clear. I know this dosent stop people breeding and then not registering the pups but it puts my mind at rest and ive never had anyone who was put off by the sale agreement the pups come with.
All the best Gwen Hasweth staffs
