Does it matter where your dried dog food is kept, i keep mine in the shed as they are large sacks and don't really want them in the house, but someone said to me that they can loose some of there nutrition if the weather is too cold. is this true? If so i suppose hubby will have to move out while dog food moves in. ahah.

I hope not Claudia cos thats where I keep mine. Hope someone can tell us soon.

I always thought that as long as the food was kept in a cool dry place, it would keep its nutrition until the best before date was up.

If im wrong, im sure someone will correct me.

Regards

Ben :)

Hi,

Well mine is kept in a  small purpose built feed room next to kennels but I tip my bags into a plastic dustbin and then then obviously lid on handles over top so lid can't be knocked off,the bins were only £7 each and I have 4 of them.Between bags the bins are easily very well washed out using a mild disinfectant.

Cool, dry, dark place is best. Beware of concrete floors as moisture can be absorbed from the floor into the bag. Best stored in plastic buckets with secure lids if outdoors to avoid vermin having a go (the bags make excellent nesting material!), and secure lid indoors to avoid your best friend having a go.

i do exactly as briony does .decided on the barrels when i lost a fair bit of food to mice in the shed, chewing through  the bags.the feed just acted to entice them and in the end i caught over 60 in a few weeks.

Thanks. Bins with lids are now on my shopping list.

If you are going to pour the food out into a food bin make sure it is specifically designed to store food,if you dont have a food bin put the whole bag with the food in it into the bin, does that make sense?

If you store your food in any old container that is not food safe, the fats and oils basically bonds to the plastic which in turn makes it go rancid quicker. If you have to store your food in a bin make sure to line it with a bin liner and replace it each time you refill the bin.

Better to avoid plastic altogether and use metal bins with secure lids.

I agree, plastic isnt the best, glass is the most appropiate storage method which is unaffordablefor most.
The ideal thing would be to store the kibble in a fridge, buy a cheap second hand one, then you can keep the food in it's original package.

I buy the smallest bags,1kg.which lasts 1 month for my 2 dogs, probaly only last a couple of days for big dogs.

I would only buy enough food to last a month, or two at the max.
