Hi

Can anyone tell me the birth weight of a king charles cavalier? And before anyone jumps down my throat I know it is going to vary.

The 'Book of the Bitch' states  Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 5 to 8 oz  but a Cav breeder should have more info :)

I had a litter of CKCS 4 weeks ago. The smallest was just under 9 ounces and the other 4 were just under 10 ounces. They were quite big pups though !

Wow, in my experience that would be enormous for Cavlaier pups.  It is many years since I had a Cavalier litter, but my pups were usually between  4 & 6 ozs.   I did once have a singleton who was 9 oz.  My American Cockers (a substantially bigger breed than Cavaliers) are usuallly 6 - 8 oz.

The reason I ask is because a friend of mine has just had a litter of 3 dogs and she says that they weighed between 10 and 15ozs.  I think that is a mistake but she insists it right.  Still she did breed without any health checks and found the stud dog through advertising even though I told her strongly that she was making a stupid and careless mistake

Wow!  15oz, I've never had a cocker pup at that weight

15 oz!!  That would be a big Gordon puppy!  And a good sized Rottie.

I have had a litter of Labs recently and the average birth weight is between 10 and 14 ozs. My the were 21ozs, 20 ozs and 14.5ozs. now at nine weeks they weight between 8.5 kilos and 11 kilos. they are already a third of their full adult weight. Also they were hand reared.

Goodness, that would be a large pup for Rough Collies! 
Are these Cavaliers bigger than the breed standard?  In the grooming parlour, I see some as big as cockers, which is a pity as their owners were expecting a toy dog! :(

Infact mum is a little thing about right for a ckcs I would say.  My tt's only weighed in at between 5 and 8ozs

It'll be interesting to see how they grow.  Sometimes big pups grow steadily and small ones develop almost in front of your eyes!!
I wonder if the grandparents were large?  I've often found that the grandparents have more influence that the parents??!! 
I'll look forward to reading a progress report.

I would be concerned that the scalew were wrong, or faling that, that a mismating ot a larger dog occurred.  I have never, ever had a Cocker pup approach that size - 15 0z is  a very big pup, and I would think very hard for a Cavalier to deliver.

My GSD's were 8 to 12 ozs & my beardies roughly the same. My Great dane breeder friends puppies are usually around 1 lb. She once had a puppy born that only weighed 4 oz & looked like a mouse, he ended up one of the tallest danes I have ever seen

Average weight for my breed who are 43 -50 pound as adults is 10 0 12oz, and I have fairly frequently had them at about 15pz.  I would think your freinds pups are most untypical.

I have often seen poorly bred cavaliers the size and look of Welsh Springers.  I hear that puppy farmers often cross the cavaliers who don't ahve bitg litters with a Springer to get the num bers, as most of the Pet buyers who buy from such sources would be none the wiser.

Whelp size is very interesting.  On that really surprised me is how small Giant Sznauzer pups are listed as being ion the book of the bitch, as they can be quite tiny considering what they grow into.

Puppy birth weights are quite interesting as a whole when you think some of the smaller breeds are near the same birth weight as some of the larger ones.

My WHWT pups generally are between 6-8 OZ.

About 7 years ago I had a litter of Siberians at the same time I had a litter of Rough Collies.
The Dams were approximately the same size/weight but the pups were totally different weights.
The Siberians were averaging 15ozs but the Collies were only about 8-9 ozs.
The litters were both of 8 pups. Which I think is a big litter for a Rough Collie but about average for a Siberian.

My Mother had a litter of CKCS's 10 years ago and the pups were only 5-8 ozs.
We just lost the pup She kept this year.
