is it illegal to own a wolfdog? I am buying one next week and I was told by the breeder to tell everyone she is a husky cross cos if they have wolf in them you need a special lisense is this true?

Yes.

Why would you want to own a dog that is part wild animal?  It has taken ttens of housands of years to adapt the domestic dog to bhe able to live with us, tonig down some of their insticncts inorder than mtheyn can fit in with us.  Trying to reverse this is neither safe or responsible, and not good for the poor qanimals so produced either, as often they will be unable to cope with the stress of living with us.

There are plenty of Spitz breeds that are much more suitable as pets without the danger of adding a volatile wild animal into the equation.

course - the breeder could be saying that because it IS a husky cross and she/he doesn't want to be found out for selling normal domesticated animals.

I have to say that I think ChloeH's reply is possibly about right. There are very few genuine Wolves in the UK and even less that would allow one to be used at stud. I would seriously question the probity of the breeder before parting with any money.

Regards, John

Here is the Law as it stands. As you can see, if this animal you're buying is a genuine wolfdog (unlikely) then it cannot be kept as a normal domesticated dog.

I agree ChloeH it WILL be a husky cross! Hope you know what your doing Guest, and hope your not paying too much money for the 'kudos' of owning a 'part-wolf'. Ha, one born every minute.

Could possibly be one of these Utonagon breeders who try to convince people they are buying part wolves :( I suppose is sounds better than cross breed ;)

I should apologise to the breeders of these dogs out there who don't resort to lies to sell their pups :)
