Hello
I wondered if this is normal?? On Saturday morning both my SBT pups were wormed with Drontol plus.By the evening both the pups were very unwell. Both were vomiting, rapid heartbeat and panting and had absolutely no energy. They also wouldnt drink although later on in the evening had a small amount of chicken.
Is this normal? I was so worried I called the vet who was unavaliable surely they shouldnt be reacting like that?
I must add that they were both fine by the follwoing afternoon but I worry that they may be allergic to the tablets (which I doubt as both dogs had the same symptoms although they are closely related) or am I just being paranoid?
Please set my mind at ease.

Hi
Had my 8wk old staff wormed on sat morning at the vets. He also had his first injection. That night he had the runs when he is usually solid and woke us up howling in the night. He's fine now. Our older sbt had quite a bad reaction to worming as a pup and I've been told that its completely normal. The stuff they use for worming has to be quite potent or else it wouldn't get rid of the worms and I would have thought by now that the tablet would have gone through their systems so you shouldn't get any more problems. There are different makes of worming tablets and I would mention their reaction to your vet and ask for a different brand of tablet next time. Hope this sets your mind at ease.

Thanks Charly that reassures me they just both seemed so poorly and little Rosie went and hid in the spare room and was a sorry little soul coughing, vomiting I thought she was on the way out!
I will definetly mention it to the Vet next time.
We never have any reaction from worming our dogs with Drontal, either as adults or puppies.
Incidentally, it is not wise to give a dog vaccinations and wormer at the same time. You are challenging the dogs immune system with the vaccine and the digestive system with the wormer. If there are problems you will not know the cause.
I'm surprised that a vet would administer both during one visit.

I don't use Drontal but would not expect to see these symptoms after worming, especially if they had been given the correct amount. I don't generally notice any difference in my lot after worming.

Glad this topic has been raised as I wormed both Mia & Curtis recently (4 & 2 respectively) using Drontal - in Curtis's case the new 35kg sized dog tablet. 7 hours later he was sick but seemed ok, still ate the next morning etc. I assumed as it had been in his system 7 hours it would've been effective?
Will I have to re-worm the dogs as they were both vomiting within a couple of hours of having the tablets??
Thanks

My Cairn was really ill after worming, vomiting etc so much so that whisked him off to the vets straight away. It's up to you but I left it for 3 months and then rewormed him with a different drug. The vet was really surprised at the dogs reaction too, so it's interesting for me to hear that other dogs have similar problems.
That's why I have found this website so helpful

Yup,
My dog was very ill after Drontal as a puppy, sickness, diarrhoea, panting, etc. scared me enough to take him back to the vet. I was told that it was unusal to have a bad reaction and not to give drontal next time, but to use a different wormer.
I used panacur on the pup I have now and still there was diarrhoea for a few days but none of the other problems.
Is this a terrier thing or do all pups get it?
I qork as a vets receptionist and it is amazing the amount of dogs that are noted to vomit after drontal on their records. My dogs are usually ok, but i have recently started using milbemax as it is a much smaller, single broad spectrum wormer, and less dogs seem to react to it. Panacur favourite tablets seem to be quite popular too.
I am not sure if you should re worm them, perhaps you should give the vet a call.
Hello,
I wormed my puppy last night at around 5 and by 9:30 he has been sick six times, although I phoned the vet and explained and was told it would setting it could just be that he has worked and it reacted,
But I am unsure if I comtinue giving him the coming granules for the course of three days or I stop

You did not worm same time as vaccinations? If so it could be both things are just too much for him, I always alternate worming and vaccination..
With that much of a reaction I'd not give him any more and worm again in a week or two. I have never given the granules (assuming it is Panacur) only the liquid.
On the other hand you might prefer to give a different wormer with a different composition. Milbemax (unless it is a collie or other herding breed), Drontal puppy etc
Wormers are strong chemicals and reactions are not surprising or uncommon, though less so with modern wormers than those of the past.

Always used Milbemax and not had any problems.
