I am going to purchase another Yorkshire Terrier (pedigree),
and this time I would like to offer him as a stud dog.
Being new to this could someone please tell me the qualifications
to look for when searching for a puppy.
Thanks

Hi guest
yorkshire terriers are not my breed but as a general rule you need to consider the following-
1. go to a breeder who shows there stock and make clear what you are looking for.
2. only buy a puppy from two health tested parents
3. your puppy will need to be of show quality in order for you to show him so people will want to use him at 8 weeks old often the best a breeder can promise is that his parents are good quality and the puppy has no defects/mismarks ect... detrimental to a show career at the time of sale.
4. make sure his lines are compatible with the lines of your own bitches.
5. be prepared for him to be hard work ,he may show temperment changes or may never even make the grade as a stud.
6. be prepared to help rehome any offspring produced by him regardles of there age or any problems they may have.
im sure someone with a greater knowledge of the breed will be along shortly :)

Just to clarify kao kate's answer, it is usual for the owner of the bitch to select the stud dog which they feel would compliment their bitch the best. For that reason the owner of the stud dog needs to get the dog to the places where the breeders are likely to see him. This, according to what the breed is could mean showing, gundog working tests, field trials, Sled dog events or whatever that particular breed is used for. Obviously for Yorkie's, the show ring is the place to be seen.

Owning a stud dog is not about buying a dog and waiting for the stud fees to roll in. He will need to come from health tested parents. He should be tested himself as soon as practicable and where applicable retested each year. You will need to train him to look his best in the ring, (Remembering that the show ring is his advertising stage.) You will also need to research his lines to know what is behind him.

If you follow this then you will have plenty of fun but if you are thinking of it as a way to make money then I'm afraid you will not make much.

Regards, John
