Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Staining on leg - can't remove

I have been treating a saliva stain on my dogs leg for a month now but have seen very little improvement (in fact it has got worse). I have tried bicarbonate of soda, whitening shampoo etc with no effect. He has been to the vets and there is no underlying problem with the leg - it started when he had a blood test on the leg and it was bandaged - he licked the bandage and continued licking the leg even after the bandage was taken off. This was a couple of months ago. I wouldn't normally be bothered but it is a very large stain taking up almost all of his inner leg, I'm always getting told 'he's bleeding' etc as the stain is so bad.
I did a search and came up with a method of bleaching the fur - but this seems rather drastic, however I cannot seem to find another way. Should I just put a bandage on the leg to stop him licking at it or could that make him move his attentions to another part of his body?
If I did bleach it, would it affect me showing him? (The bleaching would be a one off occurrence - I'm not bothered about every day stains, but a saliva stain of approx 2" x 6" is a rather large area!) It isn't his first show for another month. I really don't want to have to resort to this but can't see another way. I have tried putting a chew deterrent on his leg but he continues to lick it even with the chew deterrent on! I can prevent him from licking at it whilst I am there but if I have to pop out, even for a moment - he starts licking it again. He's not doing it through boredom, or because of loneliness (I have two other dogs).

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

Being honest I was adviced a few years back by several people to bleach one of my dogs feet as she had adsorbed red dye from new chips that had been laid in the garden. Being honest I did try it very carefully with a brush and away from the skin BUT I would NEVER EVER do it again. It was nice and clean after doing it but it only lasted about 2 days as the hair was so porous that it socked up everything else and was stained again.

I have found washing with hibscrub to be quite effective and if it is very bad watered down Peroxide in a spray bottle left for a couple mins only and then properly rinsed ( one that you can buy over the counter at the chemist for gurgling)  Can't remember the % off hand but it is very low then diluted again by me.

BTW Bleaching is not allowed on a show coat.

Good luck :-)

Hi Guest

Saw the heading and wondered why you wanted to remove the dogs leg just because it is stained :D

One thing you might try is bandaging all four legs as this will give him something else to think about although there is always the risk that he might start on all of them but I have found that bandaging two legs often stops a dog having a go at the bandage on the bad one (and stops them limping, pacing and all sorts)

Again, thinking laterally - instead of considering bleaching him just dye him pink so the whole body looks the same :D

If you can't find a way of stopping him from licking his leg, even if you remove the stain, it's just going to come back!!!   My dogs don't like the smell of lemon, try rubbing lemon juice on the leg, the lemon might even take the stain away!!
