We have a 6 year old Siberian Husky bitch, who has previously whelped one litter of 8 pups (3 years ago) without any problems.
At 29 days after mating she started to lose dark coloured blood, in the amount you would expect to see if she were in season. As I was sure she was in whelp, we went to the vets, where a scan confirmed "loads; more than just 3 or 4" of pups, all of which seemed to be alive and moving.

We have put the bitch on a low dose of antibiotic and have to go back for a re-scan in 18 days. The vet says in his experience we have a 50/50 chance of getting live pups at the end of the pregnancy. The question is; is nature just `culling` a few pups now, if there are too many?

Does anyone have experience of a bitch bleeding during pregnancy, and what was the outcome?

Thanks,

Debi Scott,

Sadly this did happen to my bitch back in the summer.  She had previously whelped a healthy litter of 7 pups !  Around day 27 she started passing small clots in her wee, by day 29 it looked like she was back in season, bleeding quite heavily.  My vet, like yours, put her on a course of anti-biotics which seemed to help.  By day 35 she had stopped bleeding and I thought all was well.  Sadly it was not to be, we had her scanned again around 7 weeks and the whole litter had died.  She actually started delivery her dead babies, which were very small and black, my vet said they looked as though they had died around the 5 week stage.  We had her scanned just before 5 weeks and saw 8 very lively pups :-(

I really hope that all goes well for your girl, I had lots of e-mails from people on here, a lot of them telling me that their girls had bled and they still went on to have a healthy litter at the end of it.   I know exactly how you are feeling, my girl has been mated again and I am a complete paranoid wreck at the moment  (I'm not advertising here either I have a waiting list as long as my arm)  but so far so good.

I will keep everything crossed for you and hope you get a lovely healthy litter!

Good luck!

Sharon

Hi, My Emma did exactly same as Sharons bitch, except she mummified her pups. At the second scan we saw the beginings of a pyometra and were able to treat this. If the scan had not been done I am sure Emma would not be with me now.

I have a litter at the moment and mum did exactly the same although she was on ABs and had the CHV vaccine. Mum went on to produce three very large healthy puppies.

Hope all goes well with you and you have a healthy litter
Good luck
Kay
