Topic Other Boards / Foo / What are we Celebrating?
- By Harry C [gb] Date 07.11.04 12:16 UTC
Thankfully Guy Fawlkes night is almost over, and the fireworks are all but burt out.
But does anyone know WHAT we are suposed to be celebrating?

Are we celebrating the fact that someone had the good sense to try and 'blow up' those idiots in Parliment?
Or are we celebrating because he got caught and did NOT blow up Parliment?

If Guy Fawlkes had been successful in blowing up Parliment, would we STILL be celebrating the event with 'Fireworks'?

Looks like a 'NO WIN' situation for dogs and other animals as far as I can tell.  What do you all think?
:(

Think we ought to start calling it 5-11 Harry ;)

There are enough 'Firework terrorists' out there, Melodysk, to make you right.
:D

Theres a competition in our local paper to have something to do with the local town turning on ligts with fireworks.  Competition is to draw picture of fireworks.

Idea: Draw fireworks in the sky, very pretty, calming etc, under draw animals, wild and pet, being scared and running under moving cars!!! :( sad and sick to draw I no but is true!

It's a very good question, Harry :D As my gt.uncle was nearly killed by a bomb at the Houses of Parliament (not Guy Fawkes, but the Fenians) I can claim some interest in this very serious matter ;) Had I known my gt.uncle, I might have known whether or not to celebrate his lucky escape ;) He was not seriously injured but felt the need to emigrate to Australia :)

How macarbre it is to have Guys on the fire.
For christ sake, you showing burning 'people'
It is like burning witches at a stake :o
My 5 year old very nicely says, the guys are burning, they are dead.

No Lea ..you are missing the point I think. There HAS to be a *Guy* on top of the fire because *that* is what we are celebrating on Nov 5th. :)
- By Lea Date 07.11.04 13:30 UTC
Yeah, but Why do we have to have a 'guy' on top of the fire.
I am sure Guy Fawkes didnt burn in the houses of parliment. Didnt he just get locked up :S
Lea :D :D :D (being pedantic as always!!!!!!!)

Hope this can answer your questions!  http://www.guy-fawkes.com/

What I can't understand is why Scots celebrate Guy Fawkes - after all it was King James 1st (King James 6th of Scotland) who was in Parliament & they were trying to blow him, the Palace of Westminster & the Houses up!

Thanks Christine,
but then I think I would rather see Guy burnt than what actually happened to him!!!!!!!!
Although, wouldnt it be more realistic if they burnt and efergy of his *****
Ok, off to get my coat. In a silly mood!!!!!1

Quoted from one of the many November 5th sites :

The bonfires which are the main characteristic of the celebration are used to burn effigies, called "Guys" although he wasn't burned at the stake. These effigies originally depicted the Pope - another burst of anti-catholic fervour - but now are symbolic and most people think they really do represent Guy Fawkes and his failed attempt to destroy the King and Government

So there you go ...now speaking as a Catholic, I guess I should abhor the whole thing :D

Oh and no to the *just put into prison* thing , he was hung drawn and quartered, then buried, grave opened up and head cut off and displayed. Normal stuff for traitors back then ;)

Well I am Irish and have no real idea why this is done? my daughters say it is because Guy F did not succeed. In ireland the focus is on Halloween.

The sale or fireworks has been banned in Ireland for as long as I can remember (sometime in the '60's perhaps), - some people do get their hands on the illegally.

The ban, from what I can remember, was a political one initially, but proved to be a wise one for various other reasons.

Can anyone tell me why the fireworks starts about prior to the date (5 November)?

Can anyone tell me why the fireworks starts about prior to the date (5 November)?

Because the idiots can get hold of them?
- By ice_queen Date 07.11.04 14:21 UTC
like what mel said!!!  People can get them so they let them off.  birthdays in november, anniversaries etc.

I must admit when I was younger I went to private displays with family but now I refuse to go and if anyone inviets me I pull out the petition form and ask them to sign it :D doesn't work though :( all those poor animals that get scare, hurt and killed, not to mention the people....did anyone see casulty last night?  young boy died because fireworks he had in his bag went off when he got too close to a fire etc thought it was brillient, hope some people learn from it!

Edited to say: I ment brillient storyline not that a boy died.
