Topic Other Boards / Foo / Spam? or virus?
- By porkie [gb] Date 05.11.04 22:38 UTC
I received an email tonight from 'fosterkey@btinternet.com,which stated that my computer had been sending out spam and to fix this I should open the attachment and follow the instructions?! Not likely! has anyone else had this type of email sent to them? I'm certain it was a scam and that it probably contained a virus or some nasty little bug in it's attachment

It is probably a virus or worm, just delete it :)

A lot of worms are spread like that. Another one is to tell you that you have a virus and "Open this attachment to find out how to delete it."

Best thing with any of those is to delete them then run your virus checker just to make sure you have not been infected by them.

There is one simple golden rule and that is - If you don't know who sent it then DELETE IT, DON'T
EVEN THINK ABOUT OPENING IT.

There is an excellent way of investigating  your mail before you open it, and that is by using a program called "mailwasher" which can be downloaded free off the internet.
Instead of opening your inbox, you initially open mailwasher. Mailwasher allows you to view your mail whilst still on the web, without downloading it onto your computer. You can also view the source of your mail. It gives you a better chance to investigate your mail before deciding to accept it. Mailwasher also has excellent filters to cut spam and junk mail.I had a lot of these fake ebay mails that are knocking about, but i was able to identify that they were fake by looking at the source on mailwasher.
I would heartily recommend mailwasher to everyone who has a mailbox. THere is a free version and there is a version that you can purchase.

If I don't know them I delete them and anyone I ask to email me I ask them to put "specific" info in the title. Works for me everyone else is spam :) and deleted.
