why do puppies chew stuff they shouldnt? Ours has an active life, always someone or something about to play with and has an endless supply of toys so why did she this morning chew the edge of the lounge carpet whilst i was making a cup of tea. Up until now weve been really lucky and all she chewed was a leaf of a plant. Shes tried other stuff but weve always told her no and given her something she is allowed to chew on. When does the chewing phase generally finish?

There are several main 'chewing' phases, but they generally peter out when the dog's adult teeth are finally settled in the jaw - at round about a year old. In the meantime it's a question of keeping an eye on them, and not leaving them alone with stuff that matters.

Our pup was a terrible chewer  - she would chew the kitchen door frame while I popped to the loo :D We just restricted her to the kitchen (which we didn't mind about as we were planning to replace it :) ) and put her into her cage whenever she couldn't be supervised for more than a few minutes. We did try to give her plenty of things to chew - bones and empty water bottles were her favourites. She stopped chewing completely by the time she was a year - which was also when she had her first season - I don't know whether that had anything to do with it :)

Our youngest has a fixation with chewing the skirting boards when he was going through that stage-in addition trying to rip the tassels of a fairly expensive new rug... :rolleyes:  It was a case of as previously mentioned, keeping things out of his way or keeping him out of the way of things (bit difficult when it came to skirting boards!) and also distracting him with far nicer (and appropriate) things to chew of his own-i.e. raw bones, cold nylabones etc-he soon lost interest in the wood work.. Although we did end up taping the tassels of the rug to the underside as he still has a fascination with them at 2 years old...
