Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch's returned in whelp!
- By Schip Date 03.11.04 19:07 UTC
I've come to the conclusion there's a something in the air this year re dog owners and their return to breeder practices.

Earlier this year a breeder friend of mine had a bitch returned and rehomed her to another show home via my house it was easier that way as I was in the middle so to speak of the 2 homes, this was a bitch with 1 CC under her belt and previous owners were cutting their numbers down, new owners have her litter mate.  Not a problem all paperwork sorted etc etc, that is until about 2 wks post transfer and said bitch still overweight started showing milk, not to worry she had a season so this is poss a phantom timing would be right ----------- wrong 3 wks post transfer said bitch delivered by C section 4 puppies one of who had no palate.  By this time the bitch is back at my house due to new owners university finals, a mature student just in case you're wondering lol, so not in a position to have a litter at that point  but had planned one for later in the year with same bitch.

Previous owners advised and appeared shocked but willing to sign registration documents to allow litter to be registered, there is good reason for this but it's too lenghty to go into at this point.  New owners ask for a contribution towards the cost of this litter, previous owners say no way and a few other choice suggestions such as a stud fee pmsl of £500 for an unproven unshown  unrequested stud!  Plus £1,500 for the bitch which was passed on by the breeder not previous owner.

Now we come upto date and another owner has returned 3 dogs to same breeder over a period of 3 wks, first only looking for 1 ticket to make it a champion but won't hand papers over wants to carry on showing to title but not living with dog.  Things deteriorate over the next 2 wks culminating in 2 other dogs returned to same breeder with papers for the first dog but not other 2 one of who is a bitch claimed to be in season ----- vet checked yesterday, season well over, bring her back in 2 wks to scan for pups as suspected in whelp!!!!!!!!

Has the world gone mad or what?  I know if I was the previous owner in either case I'd be ashamed of myself and if I knew either bitch was in whelp I'd at least tell them it's a possiblity what do you think?

Gobsmacked!  Unbelievable how some people behave.  Your breeder friend must be tearing hair out.

Certainly is and is very upset about the last 2 as previous owner claimed she couldn't rehome the male because he was from the last litter breeder and her Late husband bred, she's questioning her ability to find good homes for her puppies.  Thing is these dogs range from 5 1/2 yrs down to 2 so non of them were puppies or problem animals, the first bitch I reared her pups and the new owners pet homed them and sorted all the documentation out such as contracts etc, as the kc said it was better to register this litter as their mother is a carrier for MPS 3b and the previous owners refused to test their dog claiming he was ok, so this litter is restricted and the people are lovely getting in touch with any one of us if they have a problem and sending photo's etc.

I now have the 2nd bitch here and she's adorable, just walked in a jelled no problems even my matriarcal bitch let her take over and sleep on my bed hmmm not sure about that part lol.  I've also managed to find a home for the non show male so fingers crossed he'll be sorted in the next few days, which leaves us with the male with 2 CC's who we'll keep showing until he's used next yr on a bitch of mine for a test mating.  MPS 3b DNA test has thrown a bit of a problem with the NORMAL's tested early on in that they've produced puppies who are carriers which shouldn't be possible, so now I need to do a test mating on my normal bitch with this carrier dog to see if our tests are reliable.  Fingers crossed this boy also has a home next year with a show friend of the breeders who has admired this boy for a while now but of course it's a no sale from this end just them paying the expenses to ship him overseas.

I've just decided no more show homes for my pups working yes show highly unlikely and possibly a complaint to the committee about these people and their behaviour.

Out of curiosity, what is MPS 3b?  Is it something specific to your breed?  (assume schipperkes)  You and the breeder sound extremely responsible, so thank goodness the dogs have ended up with you rather than just being passed on to anyone.

Hi Schip. It's not just your breed unfortunately. I've long since decided my pups are better off in pet homes than with show people (with a few exceptions of course) who just move them on if they are not instant winners or become "inconvenient"

MpS 3 B is specific to Schips at present or at least the test is, it's a lysomal storage disease that is fatal if the dogs  have the gene's from both parents.  At present it seems to be an American bloodline problem as those of us with carrier dogs have tested all our stock and only the America progeny have proven to be carriers so far.  Unfortunately some normals from the early tests have produced pups that if their status were correct couldn't have the gene but they do, hence we're going to do the test mating with a tested carrier dog and a tested normal bitch.

I now have 2 more dogs to get tested in case this bitch is in whelp otherwise it's testing the whole litter and as the swabs have to go stateside it can take a while so got to sort that out this weekend.  Things are looking good for the non show male, the people interested want to see him on Saturday and if he gets on with their bitch and gets neutered he'll be gone by the end of the mth.

Great news on the overstandard male, he's getting neutered on Monday and going to his new home by the end of the week if everythings ok with his stitches etc.  His new owners have had schips in the states as well as one of mine here in the UK so they're well versed in the idioscrasies of the breed and he adored them once he'd scent marked every available blade of grass at least 3 times lol.

Previous owner is now claiming not to be able to find papers for these 2 animals but was interested to hear that we had found a home for this boy, so am expecting a request for monies to pay for papers if  not now at least later if this bitch is in whelp, the cynic in me is saying yep she knows the bitch is in whelp and is gonna wait for us to do the work etc and then not allow us the papers unless we pay her for them ie about the price of a rehomed dog and a litter of pups.  We're not going to allow that to happen the bitch might have got a first at crufts 04 but she don't have to be bred or shown again and neither do her pups they can all go to pet and agility homes without papers as long as the homes are good it won't matter a jot to new owners or us.  We won't be blackmailed over this but the KC have been advised of the situation and have told us to put it in writing to the relevant department who will consider the issue of registration and papers for the bitch at least, that was a nice surprise for us.
