Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / dog not cocking his leg

I have a 18month old cocker spaniel called Murphy who will only ocassionaly cock his leg when doing his 'business'-he prefers to squat. Is this normal behaviour? Thanks for any advice.

Some males never cock their legs; it is not that unusual.

Often castrated dogs do not cock their legs either.

I didn't realise that not all male dogs cock their leg until I got my first boy years ago-and then I did wonder if there was something wrong but my vet put my mind at ease.  And now I have 4 boys, and only one them will cock his leg 50% of the time-the others rarely bother!

My old boy, to the day he died, only ever cocked his leg in public, never when he was at home. If your cocker is not cocking his leg don't worry about it. Whtever hes happy doing is fine.

Regards, John

I would say thank your lucky stars, as leg cocking is one of the disadvantages of owning male dogs. :D

My middle elkie coks his leg in public but when in the garden he just stands as normal and wees!!!!and wees and wees...its his party trick(when we have bbq's)..no one can believe he can pee for sooooo long...leaves a stream from one end of the patio to the other!

What is the problem with leg-cocking ? :) Apart from wanting to stop at every lamp-post or blade of grass (easy to train out of them if they are on the lead :) ) - I've never had a problem with my dog. It would be like a man sitting on the loo for a wee if my dog didn't cock his leg - even if he is castrated he can be very masculine (the dog NOT my husband :D :D )

The problem with leg cocking is that when something new appears (or something old in a new place - it has to be marked. That's why the washing basket, full of clean washing has a yellow rinse, why the sun lounger feels unusually warm (& damp) when you lie on it and why the new little Conifer is scorched to death within hours of being bought ....................................... :D
