I was waiting for a bus 1 day last week, there was a woman waiting with her 2 sons. The bus stopped and off got 2 women with a GS on a lead. The dog looked calm and placid.
1 of the boys said thats a big dog. His mother replied very nast and very loud. Keep away from those dogs they're horrible nasty things, I hate them. The look on her face was hatefull.
The women with the dog heared her comments and seemed shocked and hurt.
My blood was boiling and was going to say something to her but I didnt, I just gave her a fed up look.
Why are people so narrow minded. I know not everyone likes dogs I have no problem with that but why carry on like that.

I know what you mean, it's like the parents who grab hold of their child and drag them out of the way when we are walking through town. I mean our girls are very placid looking, not snarling, rabid beasts!!! That sort of behaviour will only amke a child fearful and then behave in the wrong way when something may happen, like run away from a dog thats has slipped it's lead and is trying to make friends. Saying that it can be just as irrating when peoples kids come running up to say hi to our dogs without asking, Kay in particualr is a good sized, powerful, excitable dog and even on a lead, with Chloe in the other hand it can be difficult then the parnt starts raving about muddy paws and clothes! get a lead on the kid then!!!!I know why some people do it, the news running horror stories about vicious dogs etc, but if a dog was dangerous it would be wearing a muzzle, or a halti-some dumb*** once took a look at Chloe wearing a halti and said 'urh don't go near that dog-it's wearing a muzzle' How stupid can you get?!!!
People never seize to astound me with their ignorance!
Rant over, maybe I need some sleep before I go mad! :)

I get this with my 6 kg shih-tzu's aswell!! Some parents and their equally irate kids act as if they are rabid wolves coming toward them.
The biggest thing that annoys me is when we are at an off leash park and someone barks,"them dogs oughta be on leads" to which i reply maybe your kids should be on a lead! I used to ignore them in the beginning but i just cant anymore,if they are going to be rude and ignorant to me than i will be back, and i also try explaining to them that not ALL dogs bite, and if mine were aggresive i would have on a leash,it is not a good idea to put more fear into an already fearful child.

The kids of that mother on the bus will most likely grow up and be as ignorant as her as will their kids :(
The onus is on us to teach our dogs to behave in public, which my dogs do,but what about parents?? They should equally teach their children how to behave around dogs,it could prevent an attack or a dog chasing a kid down when it is running around screaming with arms flying about.

Parents should definately NOT put their fear/hate of dogs onto their children, especially when a kid wants to pat my dog and the parent forbids it,coz they will BITE!!

My little Emma was badly abused and neglected by her previous owner and her dogs and she still has the most sweetest, friendliest nature,i may be letting my emotions get the better of me,but it really hurts me when someone looks at her with disgust/fear or hatred.

I think the best thing is to make these people feel as silly as they are behaving.
I DO NOT trust people who hate dogs or animals, there is something just not right about them, they all seem to have the same sour attitude!

Drives you mad doesn't it?  Some people are so small minded it's ridiculous, and sadly things like that do end up rubbing off on their children.

I've got Shepherds myself and have heard all of these kind of things, nothing surprises me now.....it's sad.

When i got my first 2 BSDs, it was the height of the dangerous dogs act, and as i walked down the street (which i didn't do that often as usually they were exercised in more appropriate places) people used to give me a look and cross over :(  Some seemed genuinely scared and some just seemed to want to cause upset.

I was in 2 minds about posting this as I thought it may be seen as trivual. But it was something I wanted to get off my chest and it seems its given some of you who think likewise to have your  little rants.
I fully agree with all you have said.

That would have made me very angry!
It's like owning Staffies, I'm fed up of people being so ignorant, assuming all Staffies are vicious, snarling beasts.  If they just stopped and asked about them and gave them a fuss they would see how gorgeous they really are! :)  Instead they just cross the road and give you a dirty look as if to say they shouldn't be allowed out

when we got winnie SBT the girl next door who plays with my grandson was told by her grandmother to be careful as *those* dogs are liable to rip your face off when they get older !!!!!.

My daughter is 24yrs old now. When she was 7 I bought her a Rottie pup. He was a dream. At the time we had a 3lb Yorkie dog( male).
The number of times we had people, Grandma's being the worst, saying to their kids 'Don't touch the big evil, devil dog he will bite. Stroke the little one'.
I would tell them the Yorkie was a nasty little thing and they would still encourage their kids to stroke him.
On a couple of occasions he had a 'snack' and the 'owner' of the kids would complain. I always told them it was their fault and the kids would happily play with the Rottie for ages without fear of being bitten.
Now as a 'Grandma' I tell my Grandkids to ask if it is OK to stroke a dog and only ever when it is on a lead with it's owner.
My youngest Granddaughter is just 2yrs old and it's amazing the sense she has with dogs, she has a Mastiff bitch at home, she would never touch a dog without the owner being there.
Some people have no sense at all and the worst are those with 'phobia's' of their own. They seem to teach their children to have the same 'phobia's'.

I agree Da4n. My niece as 2 rotties. When she got her first 1 about 6yrs ago, me being a mother of younger children then told them to be carefull round him (I listend to the media too much) it got the point they were the new "Devil Dog". I can honestly say hand oh heart he is the most addorable loving friendly dog you could ever wish to meet.
I do get the odd look when Im out with my akita but the magority of people I meet have a different oppinion and always ask if its ok to stroke her.
As the old saying goes you dont get bad dogs just bad owners.
