Can hear fireworks being let off again.     This has been going on for a fortnight now and the poor dogs are going frantic.     I wouldn't want to spoil anyones fun but they are letting them off at all times these days (birthdays, passing exams, weddings ect).     As least on Bonfire Night we are prepared for it and can make sure that our pets are indoors.     My two are afraid to go out to wee when it gets dark!!
- By cazf [gb] Date 01.11.04 19:24 UTC
They've been going off for nights here too.

Luckily mine aren't frightened but my mum's is petrified.

I agree, I wouldn't want to be a spoilsport but there are far too many going off.

Hi Jackie M,
"FIREWORKS" Agggggg!!, I hate them, AND the people who let the off.
I am a firm believer in fireworks being banned from sale to the general puplic.  The local newsagents in my area has had fireworks on sale at HALF PRICE for the past six weeks.  So you can imagine, we have been plagued with bangs and whizzzes for all that time.
My poor dog is a quivering wreck, running around looking for a place to hide.  God only knows how the wild life manage to cope.

Where can I get some ear plugs for dogs?

We have just had the moron next door letting fireworks off for half an hour
- By Lea Date 01.11.04 20:27 UTC
Fireworks should only be allowed for organised displays and NEVER sold to the general public!!!!!

When I was young we always had a little firework display in our garden.....on November 5th. I can see no reason for fireworks being used at any other time. We have also been putting up with them for the last week or so with no consideration shown. The least neighbours should do is let you know that they will be letting off fireworks on nights other than the 5th.
Maybe they should only go on sale to the general public from Nov 1st, this would cut down on some of the problems - otherwise I'd like them sold to organised displays only.

As far as I am concernd they shoud be on november 5th at organised, public displays only.  This is not spoiling fun but keeping them for somethign they shoudl be!

I refuse to go to private displays and keep my music on loud... :D

I shouldn't laugh really, but after saying on another thread that Tara was getting better with fireworks .......... Last night, about 11pm, it had been very quiet here, very few fireworks. I had gone to bed and Tara was in her cage in the kitchen (door open) as usual. Hubby was watching the TV in the lounge with Bramble. Suddenly there was a loud bang - (some nice people had decided to have some fireworks in the field next to our house) and the next thing that I knew was Tara was in bed with me :D :D She is not allowed on the bed normally, but obviously decided that it was the best place to be :D Fortunately, the fireworks didn't last long and she took herself off, downstairs to bed :)

How do you give them the rescue remedy? straight into the mouth or do you put it in their water bowls?

- By Jackie M [gb] Date 02.11.04 20:20 UTC
I have given mine rescue remedy but I am not sure that is helps!    They still bark and shake when they hear a loud bang.    My eight year old jumps on my lap and I have to stroke her head and she is not normally a lap dog.   Why do they have to be so loud?
- By kayc [gb] Date 02.11.04 20:41 UTC
Thankfully I dont have that problem, living in the courtryside and having bombproof labs. But, today just over the river one of the cottages set some fireworks off, Bang and I had three Labs sitting and waiting for their command for the pick. The Boomblaster (electronic scarecrow) tends to have this effect on them as well.
- By Sullysmum Date 04.11.04 19:34 UTC
Totally agree with you Lea!!!!!!!
- By pinklilies Date 02.11.04 18:24 UTC
I totally agree that for the sake of animals, an d the safety of humans, that fireworks should be limited to licensed displays and for limited periods. So many  animals are terrified....its so unfair.
(Having said that, my two just dashed out onto the patio and are thoroughly enjoying the next door neighbours fireworks display :D But then my dogs aren't normal.)

We've had fireworks going off in the garden next door all evening, you would think they would have had the courtesy to let us know beforehand. I've been in the kitchen with my two this evening cos Sam started drooling again I think he must just be anxious.

- By Jackie M [gb] Date 04.11.04 20:25 UTC
Did any of you see that fireworks factory on the news tonight......poor people living there didn't expect a display like that!!!!
- By SharonM Date 04.11.04 20:38 UTC
One of my girls this year has decided she doesn't like fireworks after all, she's 5 1/2 years old and has never shown any fear what so ever.  This year is completely different, she paces, pants, barks.............so I decided to try one of these D.A.P Diffusers, well so far so good, my girls are fast asleep in their bed and fireworks are going off all around, so I think I have found something that works.  Tomorrow and over the weekend will be the true test though.
- By Sheena [gb] Date 04.11.04 21:55 UTC
all pet owner  whose animals are suffering from fireworks are asked to record and photograph their  behaviours so that they can be sent on to Tony Blair to help ban  fireworks.

They need to be sent to

or you can email them  fireworksExperiences-rspca.org.uk

Well I've got the D.A.P. Diffuser plugged in and Rescue Remedy in dogs water ......pity they don't make ear plugs for dogs!!!!    Will be glad when tonights over
- By Rachel20 [gb] Date 05.11.04 11:47 UTC
Fireworks....I despair!
Even worse, just has someone call at work and ask if it would be ok to take her dog to a fireworks display tonight?!!
OMG!! How can someone be so clueless!
- By ClaireyS Date 05.11.04 14:39 UTC
There was  mini dachsund at the display I went to last weekend, the poor little thing looked petrified :(
- By archer [gb] Date 05.11.04 14:31 UTC
Did anyone see the picture of that poor dog in the paper. Some kids had got the dog to hold a firework in its mouth and set it off!!!
A nice couple found it on the road and the woman broke down in tears when she saw the poor little sole.
There was also a warning for people to keep animals in all over the country because of this sort of behaviour....we shouldn't need to...these ''explosives'' should be banned so that little b######s like this can't do things like this.

- By Rachel20 [gb] Date 05.11.04 14:33 UTC
I know it was terrible, nearly made me cry. :(
I see that the couple who found him/her would like to adopt it, which is a happy end to a horrible story.
- By Jackie M [gb] Date 05.11.04 14:57 UTC
I makes you wonder what they will do next.    Didn't see that in the paper......poor dog!
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 05.11.04 18:06 UTC
Its just gone 6pm, and they are already starting up in the gardens near to us.

My cat has just ran in petrified, the dogs are wound up, here goes a peaceful evening!!!!!!

I HATE THE D****D THINGS.
- By Lea Date 05.11.04 18:42 UTC

Got to try and get her to wee and pooh before tonights out otherwise she will be holding it for 24 hours by morning :(
Oh why cant they be only for organised displays. That way you would know they were only going off between 6 and 9 at the most!!!!!!!!!!!!

- By Daisy [gb] Date 05.11.04 20:09 UTC
I have one hiding under the desk here - not as bad as previous years fortunately. Just let the older one out in the garden and all he wanted to do was to play ball - couldn't care less about the bangs over head :D :D

Well think I may have found the answer to stress caused by Fireworks.  I have given my two most upset by them (not frightened but barking for England at every bang), a dose of Nutridrops for Showdogs and they are now ignoring most of the bangs.

Thank goodness for that.
- By Lea Date 05.11.04 20:19 UTC
Where do you get nutridrops from. As Gemma is the same. She just barks at every bang :( :(
Lea :)
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 05.11.04 20:25 UTC
I got them from Canine Chemist, they are not cheap at £25.00 but my goodness the difference is amazing.

It only took a couple of days for them to get here.

Bit too late for tommorow!!!!!!!!!1
Think will get a CD for next year.

I had heard about these, so thought I would give them a go, was a bit sceptical.  But lovely to be so quiet on Bonfire Night I really can't believe it.

I wish I could have told you about them earlier but this has been my first opportunity tonight to give them a try.

- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.11.04 20:25 UTC
I've been using one of those firework desensitisation CDs over the past few weeks, and although they're not entirely happy, they're far, far better than last year.
- By LJS Date 05.11.04 21:36 UTC
I stand by if you ignore them when they start to get spooked and do some positive reinforcement by giving treats instead of feeding the fear by giving them lots of fuss when they go off it really does work ! :)

Min used to be freaked by fireworks but after I started down this route she was fine ! I have three Labs here tonight with fireworks going of all round the Close and village and all three are as happy as Larry ! :)

- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 05.11.04 21:45 UTC
Mine aren't spooked, the top male is angry and trying to defend his territory by barking at what he thinks are intruders.

He is a dog who can go shooting all day and gunshot doesn't bother him.

The bitch who is barking is spooked but then she was involved in a car accident 10 months ago and any loud noises now do upset her.

Have to say this stuff is working a treat I can recommend it, its like taking a chillout pill for them!!
- By Jackie M [gb] Date 05.11.04 22:05 UTC
Come to think of it perhaps my eight year old is barking her head off because she is trying to protecting the younger dog.....before we had the other dog she didn't take a lot of notice of fireworks.    Tonight I have had the both of them on my lap and neither have been to wee since 4.30p.m..     I hope that they will stop at 11p.m. (or is it 11.30p.m.) as they are suppose to and perhaps I will be able to take them out.   I think that the defuser helped.
- By Lea Date 05.11.04 22:11 UTC
11 every other day. 12 special days like tonight, new years eve(would say it would be later), dewali etc.
- By digger [gb] Date 05.11.04 22:15 UTC
Bonnie is totally ignoring all the fuss, she always has done.  Missy is on sentry duty and barking at all the loudest bangs (but ignoring the smaller ones).  I praise her when she's quiet and try to ignore her barking at the loud ones - but it's probably been our worst night so far since we've had her :(
- By Mary-Caroline [gb] Date 06.11.04 00:07 UTC
Poor dogs.

I'm amazed that Cashie (my whippet pup) hasn't responded at all to the fireworks.  He half opens his eyes if there is a particularly loud bang, but they don't seem to bother him.  Lucky really as we live just up the road from Ally Pally which hosts the biggest firework display in London tomorrow.  I'd expected a whippet to be quite nervous but he seems to be pretty bombproof - last Saturday I took him to a cocktail party as I couldn't get a sitter and felt that it was too long to leave him.  The music got pretty loud and the party pretty raucous, and Cashie pretty much slept through the whole thing, occasionally getting up to beg a canape or two!

I'm so glad that I got him at 8 weeks and took him everywhere.  The only things he's scared of are cats, and that's understandable as my evil-tempered enormous cat is always beating him up!

Hope everyone's dogs feel better soon.
- By polly_45 [gb] Date 06.11.04 01:12 UTC
Fireworks still going off here, glad my older two dont mind them ans slept most of the night, but little Solo who is just 18wks old thinks its great to sit outside and watch the sky, like cashie he to has been well socialised and at the present time is bomb proof hope it carries on
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 06.11.04 07:44 UTC
Being well socilaised isn't relevant IMHO, my 6 month old pup is well socialised but is terrified of the fireworks, whiclst my 3 year old who is extremely laid back about them and will watch them in the sky
- By Daisy [gb] Date 06.11.04 07:51 UTC
Yes - I'm the same here, Mel. Older dog was a rescue and had been poorly socialised with both humans and dogs - he is bomb-proof with loud noises (although we did have a lot of problems with squeaks :D ). Younger one that we have had from a pup has been well socialised - but has always been a nervous dog. She has been better this year tho' - she just wanders round the house from one 'safe' spot to the next , depending from which side of the house the current bangs are coming from. She wouldn't go out last night and so I was up at 6 to let her out - she was very suspicious as it was still dark, but after a few seconds pause at the door, she made a dash for the lawn :D

My dogs love fireworks, even the pup!  The moment they hear the first one let off they go wild and can't understand why I just sit on the sofa and ignore them.  The carpet is almost rubbed away from their (short) tails wagging non-stop all evening.

As working spaniels they associate bangs with having fun, finding things and running through the woods so why would we want to stay in with all that fun going on outside?!

It would be interesting to know from the rest of you who have working dogs how your dogs react.

I feel the new legislation has had some effect as this year fireworks don't seem to be let off indiscriminately.
- By digger [gb] Date 06.11.04 08:15 UTC
New Legislation???  So that would be why they were still being let off here at 12.30 and 6.00 this morning then??  What chance do the police stand of implementing this new legislation?
- By lucytia [gb] Date 07.11.04 09:22 UTC
Lets hope that that's the end of em for a while now.  I suppose though that there'll be a few parties still going on tonight though.  I absolutely hate them and think its the most stupid tradition going.  Don't want to spoil peoples fun and think that organised displays are by far the best route to take.  BANN THE REST!!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 07.11.04 09:26 UTC
I'm not sure what's worse - private parties or organised displays :( Our town has a big organised display which takes place across the road from Sainsbury's. We went to do our shopping on Friday evening and it was utter chaos at Sainsbury's. They had to have a huge number of extra security guards, as, apparently, they had huge problems last year with groups of young people shoplifting and others who had too much to drink etc. The car park was a nightmare - we got there just before it got really busy and when we left we had people nearly fighting over the space that we left :(

OK I live in/near a crap town :D but it's no joke :(

Daisy
- By lisa [gb] Date 07.11.04 13:53 UTC
Organised displays can be equally as frustrating.  I have spent the last 2 nights at the horses yard - On Friday I had to sedate 1 horse, last night I had to sedate 2 as there was an organised display under 2 miles from the yard.  Fortunately out of the 22 horses most were fine however what I think was more annoying was the private house next door to the yard had a firework party and didn't even have the courtesy to forewarn us.  Even though we let her socialise her puppy with the horses no thought was given to them on Friday :(  At least if we had known in advance we would of been prepared.
