Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip scoring a rescue lab?
- By mentalcat [gb] Date 29.10.04 22:55 UTC
Hello all,

I have a bit of a dilemma that I hope someone out there in CDland can advise on.

My in-laws have re-homed a lovely working lab bitch from Lab Welfare/Rescue in Yorkshire.  She's 2 years old, spayed and is very obviously a pedigree. (have had working labs for donkeys years!)

My question is this, my father in law is trying to sort out her health insurance, but as a breed known for HD, his insurance people have asked for Ceri to be hip scored.  Unfortunately, her original owners didn't pass on either her pedigree papers or a KC reg number.  I appreciate that she can't be hip scored and recorded under the KC scheme if she has not been registered, but if I entered her onto the Working trials/Agility register, could I get her scored that way?

Any help greatly appreciated as ever.

Cheers
Ali :)

Yes. Once she is registered on the working register then she can be hip scored in the normal way.

Hi,

Which insurance company is asking???

This would be interesting if pet insurance now wanted dogs to be hipscored wether pedigree or not or regesitered with KC.

Who from these insurance companies will decide which dogs have unacceptable score ,so therefore their insurance will be much higher? I have dog through trauma that has a high hipscore having said that her hips have not given her any trouble and is sound on the move.
If insurance companies wanted all dogs to be hipscored which cannot be done until 12 months anyway surely the insurance companies would still charge there nomal premiums.
In some cases by 2 yrs the scores start to naturally increase which why is recommended to score between 1yr- 2yrs.Although I do know some who have scored after 2 yrs and received reasonable scores.

The Kennel club own insurance does not ask any pedigree or pet dog to be hipscored .

If an insurance company want hip scores from a rescued lab then find another insurance company Ive not heard of this before its silly
when people adopt a rescue lab they are not entitled to any paperwork they are giving a home to an unwanted dog.
if people start wanting hip scores etc.. to insure then thats wrong.
Its hard enough in rescue to keep finding homes without insurance firms making it more difficult and for my twopenneorth  there are many working dogs with very high hip scores a hip score doesnt come into wether they be a working dog or not

Hello all,

Thanks fot the replies/info. I have to admit that I'm not sure which insurance company asked for the information as its my in-laws that have rehomed Ceri.  It may well be that they have said that they cannot offer full cover for future hip problems if she is not scored? Sounds a bit odd to me.
If they insist on it, we can register her on the WT/Activities register and then she can be scored.  I appreciate that the papers are not supposed to be given to the rescue organisation by the original owners, but its a pity that we havent got any details, at least of her dam/sire, it would have been nice to see if our other labs shared similar lines.
Oh well, the most important thing is that she's got a lovely new home with people who love her and know the joys of having working labs.

Thanks for the help

Ali :)

Hi,

The average pet owner does not hipscore usually their pet pedigree dog ,mongrel or rescue,so why would an insurance company like i said ask you to get a dog hipscored unless they then have those results off you and then they decide wether the score is too high to insure any hip condition?
Also a dog could throw a high score through trauma say eg as pup had no problems this could be rescue dog and an insurance company then say not covering this dog for hip problems as it has hip dysplaysia which in this case is not genetic and the new owner or rescue did not possibly know about early trauma as a pup (just one example).
These days to be honest its not worth getting your dogs insured because of the rising costs of the premiums and they are covering for lesss and less.
I refuse to insure any more dogs and put money aside or emergency use a credit card.Ithink people are realising
they are ripping people off and insurance companies start going down the route of wanting hip score results many people wont bother and insurance companies will lose out in the end. What will thy want nest all the health test results they will wanting virtually perfect dogs which noone can gurantee mongrel ,pedigreee or otherwise.

Briony fed up with insurance companies ripping the nation off and just pet insurance.

I have long said that vet insurance is, long term, only going to make money for the insurance company. They have the dice loaded that way. If they have a bad year and profits are down then you can rest assured premiums will be up the next year. If you can afford it then putting the premiums in a bank account will in the long run show you a handsome profit.
