A friend of mine whom many of you might remember me mentioning before has a 4 year old Bassett who just over a week ago had a funny turn whilst sitting next to her in her office, basicly as she got up and moved the chair ,the dog fell to one side on seeing this she tended to him and he looked like he was gonna be sick,so she ushered him to the door but found he was totally off balance and eventually collapsed over on his side he got to his feet almost straight away but fell again ,,he was sick, but within an hr or so was running around as normal, after discussing this with her vet ,it was decided that they should just monitor the situation as it was a one off and he was fine within mins ,how ever he was unwell just 7 days l8er with vomitting most of the day ,but appeared to be fine once again in the evening ,the following morn being today she contacted me as the dog was totally off balance once again ,drooling and panting, eyes seemed to be roll ing up into his head ,how ever he never collasped this time, within 30mins of this happening he was fine as far as walking etc... but was very subdued, hence she will be taking him to the vet tonite ,but does anybody have any knowledge or experience of bassetts behaving in this manner ,or any breed or any illness that r specific to the the bassett hound ,many thanks

Hi
I have owned many Bassets and I have never heard of Bassets being prone to seizures of any kind.
Your description sounds very like some kind of fit and if my vet did not at least take my Basset in for a thorough check up I would really consider finding another vet.
I did not see your message till today. Have you got any answer about your Basset yet? They usually are a healthy type of dog and as yours is only 4 years old that is still a young age for these type of symptoms.
I hope that this helps you and that your Basset is on the mend.

Hi Deb
Although Bassets are one of the breeds that can develope this type of dermatitis, sometimes it's an alteration in their immune response to yeast.
None of my Bassets have ever had this problem, what treatment is you vet using to this very itchy problem?
Your Basset is still very young and I hope that the problem is not spoiling your puppys joy.of being a naughty basset baby, they are a very layed back type of breed.
Good luck

its really calmed down now thank god but it was very severe when we got her she had skin scraped and all kinds of tests. She was on anti-biotics for the secondary infection caused by her scratching and piriton for 3 months and also a twice weekly shampoo ( Malsaseb) now though i keep it under control with just a bath fortnightly.
Take care Deb ( sorry for the delay with posting!)

Hi Deb
I have finally found time to take a look at this forum. There a plenty Basset Hounds out there who suffer minor/major skin problems. Sometimes it can be environmental/stress/food alergies etc. Usually no one knows. What do you feed your Basset? One of my old boys suffered skin problems from the age of 18months until the day he sadly died aged 12 3/4 yrs. We could only manage it, not cure it. We had to be verys strict about his diet. His brother never suffered any skin problems at all. Some of my other Bassets over the years have had the usual pinky/brown colour underneath the chin/under the forlegs and inside the thigh area. I have found that when we take them on holiday down to the coast.............it usually clears up within a few days. (one to think about)

Hi Loiuse its lovely to hear from other basset owners - theres not many of us on this forum and you sound very expereinced! Yes i am mananging it too but not curing it. The shampoo seems to be keeping it bay tho she still flecks a little bit. Molly's doesnt seem to be affected by her diet - when we first got her she was on Eukanuba and the vet changed it to James Wellbeloved ( hypoallergenic) then as a trial after 3 months we then changed it to pedigree complete - all of which seems to have has no input at all. However if we miss her bath she gets itchy :-(
Anyway nice to hear from all you basset owners keep in touch xxxx

This maybe a long shot.
1. Could it be poisoning...eg some poisonous plants can cause seizures and sickness of a period of days. Holly berries for one.
