Topic Dog Boards / Health / tick(?) very close to eye
- By littleman [gb] Date 31.10.04 21:04 UTC
Hi there, wonder if anyone can help. Today noticed that Alfie has a what i think is a tick extremely close to his eye, and its really bothering him. I have tried vaseline and surgical spirit, but he wont let me near it. Does anyone have any suggestions. I am going to take him to the vets tommorrow. I am quite concerned for him. Thanks

When I saw the title of the post I was going to recommend Vaseline, as being the safest thing to use in this area but if he will not let you near it then maybe it would be best to leave it alone. To try to treat a struggling dog close to the eye could result in a serious injury to the dog. Better I think to leave it to the vet.

Regards, John

My retriever always seemed to get ticks on her face.
I found that the best thing to remove them was a tick remover I bought in the pet shop. It looks like tweezers but twists the tick as it removes it to make sure the hesd is removed. The tick comes out very easily.
Unfortunately, it is still alive and disgusting!- I hate them.
Just make sure someone holds the dog's head firmly to avoid it moving.
My bitch didn't mind as there was no discomfort from removing the tick.

I use a tick remover very successfully and have never had a problem with the site afterwards either.  I usually dab with antiseptic afterwards to make sure.  The only thing I don't like, as Sheena mentioned as that you can see the little blighters wriggling afterwards - Yuk !!!

thank you all for your replies. i went to the vet today and it is a tick, which he has dealt with (its still there but apparently its dead now). Unfortnately Alfie must have been trying to get it out himself somehow, and has scratched his eye, which has now ulcerated. All this happened in just over 36 hours. So the poor little fella had a miserable time at the vets, but is perkier now.
thanks again for your help!!
