Are pigs ears ok to give to dogs. I am a little bit worried about them after reading the last post about raw hide chews. Bailey loves them ( a bit smelly ) he doesn't have them all the time every few months.

I class pigs ears in with raw hide for their ability to get stuck in the roofs of dogs mouths and getting stuck in throats :(

I was sent an e-mail about dogs choking to death after one becoming stuck in the dogs throat.  I suppose like many things you have to be sensible and supervise until the ear is finished - yum!

I feed my two raw pigs ears but never the cooked ones :)

Willis leaves his to dry out under the cushion - I got up with one stuck to my backside a few months ago. No more pigs ears for the willie-pup.

AS Meloydysk said, raw ones are fine, the ones you find for sale in pet shops etc have been deep fried ................  I avoid those!

My dogs have them, have done for years and they're fine!
Just personal choice I suppose :)

Haven't asked in there..I get marrow bones from them but they make you pay one helluva price for something they usually throw away :( I get all my other butchers stuff from the one opposite Woolies :)

Ya just grab one down the farm lea and saw its ear off when its not looking :D :D :D

Alternatively, you could indeed try the butcher.

They have a strange plastiney deadlike quality about them I find - quite disconcerting...I actually found myself examining the hairs and earwax until I got myself back under control.

Ye Gods woman, you have just gone SO down in my estimation you wouldn't believe :D :D :D

Pigs ears are fine to give to Dogs but only under supervision?

                                                       Andy.
- By Stacey [gb] Date 28.10.04 12:00 UTC
Andy,

The dried/cooked pigs ears should only be given to dogs under supervision.  They can get stuck in their teeth or throats, just like rawhide.

They are also very oily and some dogs do not tolerate them well.

I've never given my dogs pigs ears yuuk, but had a scary incident last week wehn my 7 months pup got one of those denta chews stuck in the roof of his mouth and down his throat.i had to stick my hand in and pull it out or he would've choked to death!!so no more rawhide or minty chews for my lot!!:(

I give my dogs pigs ears about once or twice a week and havn't had any problems.  I get them from a place that produces them and they are not fryed or cooked in oil but are actually put in what I call a dry oven. There are a lot of ears coming in from the continent I am told and those ears are smaller compared to the ones you get from here.  I  never give hide chews or those hide things  that look like a bone.

Rugrott,

Glad you have not had any problems with dryed pig's ears.  But they are just like rawhide - so don't assume that because you have had no problems so far you will not in the future.  Many people give their dogs rawhide and never have a problem either.

I'm aware of the dangers of pig ears and other raw hide chews, but my huskies wouldn't be without them. As with many other breeds, Sibes are chewers. They'd be bored out of their minds if they didn't have any good raw hides chews to come inside to. Each and every night my two settle down in the middle of the living room floor with a raw hide bone in between their paws, happily chewing away.

I would never leave raw hide chews with them alone, never, never, never. But I've been lucky when it comes to problems, I haven't had any. My two huskies woudn't be without a good pig ear everyonce in awhile. *sigh, soak in the quietness...* =D
