Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Harness and lead training?
- By Guest [gb] Date 26.10.04 14:13 UTC
I have recently started my dog working in harness and have noticed that their lead training (ie walking to heel etc) has all but disappeared. They now pull constantly. Have any others had experience of this and how did they resolve it? Ideally I'd like my dog to know that when the harness goes on that it's okay to pull, but when its not on then they have to behave. I know it must be terribly confusing for them - up until now I have always taught them not to pull, and now suddenly I want them to pull! I'm just wondering how to get the balance right.

What breed is it?

If they're huskies you might have your work cut out :D but for instance, my dog needs to walk on a loose lead, and also work on a harness for tracking when she is encouraged to pull. Generally i would suggest you need to do more lead walks with plenty of praise, reward etc, and use the harness not so much; also dogs tend to understand what is meant by using different equipment for different activities.....I'm not sure what activity you are doing from your original post ...:)
