How do I get rid of these from Lana. One is quite near her eye.

Funny the vet didn't notice it, but looking properly at her today she's got quite a few. Advice and help needed yet again please.

Hi Diane,
I had my first dealing with a tic over Easter while in the Lake District. I had heard that putting Vaseline on the tic would kill it and then it could be removed. We hadn't any with us, but used wax for waterproofing our walking boots. Put that on in the morning and then at teatime, with tweezers, twisted it out. Came away easily really, but I think you have to be careful not to leave any of the mouthparts behind as they can become infected. Also read on another board about someone who got a tic remover from her vets?

I find the best way is grasp with the fingers then turn slowly but firmly ANTICLOCKWISE you have to be confident and not hesitate or the tick will have time to improve its grip, also I only use fingers as I think it is too easy to squeeze too hard with tweezers, this method has never let me down and I have never left a head in.

They sell Tick removers from Focus DIY, in the Petworld bit, only about £2.99.

Get Frontline in the Spray and treat her all over. This should be effective within 48 hours they should all be dead, and will prevent reinfestation for month, and against fleas up to 3 months, not effected by Bathing!

I use surgical spirits in cotton wool on the tick for 5 minutes and then they come out quite easily. I use a tick remover to get them out. You do have to make sure you don't leave any in the dog.

If you're in any doubt get the vet to do it and buy the frontline whilst you're there. Frontline is only effective for a month against ticks, not the three months it is for fleas.

i think that is what Brainless said ?? i always keep the frontline spray and if any turn up i spray the tick directly with it and it then drops off within 24hrs or i twist it out as soon as it is dead - nasty things ticks !!! we have heard of some stupid people burning them off !!!!!! THIS SHOULD NEVER EVER BE DONE ! obviously !!!

Doh. Sorry. I obviously didn't read it properly. :)

I don't use the spray, I use the spot on liquid. I worked out how many sprays I'd need for the TH and was just too lazy :D

But the tic part of the spot on (of any version) is only 1 month while the flea part lasts for 3 months. The vet suggested I buy a small bottle of the spray to spray on the tic if we ever did get one - this has worked on the two occasions that I've needed it.

However, what we do now - with the vets permission - is use Programme for fleas because the spot ons and sprays do my allergies a BAD one - and use the spray whenever we see a tick.

They said the tic will just drop off an hour or so after the spray -directly on the tic.

I go along with brainless and I think it's a good idea to spray them if you're going away to places where there might be sheep, deer, bracken etc...my vet said it's probably effective for about a month.

As a bonus it's really nice on bread with a bit of marmalade.
