My pup has been showing some strange behaviour. First thing in the morning when I let her out of her crate, instead of greeting me and going straight out to relieve herself, she is just greeting me and then going back into her crate. Her tummy makes really lound rumbling noises. When I put out her food instead of wolfing it down she sniffs and pushes it round the bowl. Eventually she eats the food and some time later (maybe an hour or so) will go out to pee. The rest of the day is fine once she has done the first pee. I have had her pee tested at the vets and they say its ok. She is under the vet at the moment as she had problems with her Anal Glands and resulting biting and scratching causing dermatitus. She has been on anti biotics and steroids for the last two weeks. All these problems have occured following her first season.
It is so worrying when you just know there is something wrong. I have described the symptoms to the vet but she is not coming up with any answers. Can any of you help? Has anyone out there had any experience of these symtoms

How old is your pup ?. If she is still growing maybe she is getting too hungry. Sometimes, if you let yourself go for too long without food and have a really empty tummy, it can make you feel quite unwell. Maybe it is the same with dogs. Perhaps first thing in the morning she feels a bit off colour and doesn't fancy anything. Maybe the tablets are upsetting her a bit also. Might be worth giving her something light to eat just before bedtime. Just a thought anyway.
Hope she feels better soon.

I don't know exactly whats been the problem but this morning she is back to normal. Peed and pooped straight away on getting up and bouncing around as normal. She is still on the anti biotics. Her itching is still there but not as bad. The scabs seem to be healing up. We used some quistel shampoo at the weekend and this seems so have helped a lot.
It all started with her season on 29/08/04 followed by cystitus on 6/09/04. Unfortunately
we had a holiday booked on the 11/09/04 for 2 weeks and my pup whent to stay with my daughter and her dog. My pup loves her dog and they see each other regularly. She had a garden to play in and a pond to dive in (much to my daughters dismay) lots of lovely pond plants destroyed LOL. On returning from hols 24/9/04 I noticed that she was scratching and biting and we thought it might be fleas so treated her with Frontline Combo. On further examination I noticed that she had scabs on her rear end and took her to see the vet who diagnosed Anal Gland blockage and resulting dermatitus. She has been to the vets twice more and given anti biotics and steroids. The last visit she had no steroids but another 2 weeks of anti biotics untill the scabs heal up completely.
I am wondering wether this resulted from her season followed closely by us going on hols. My pup loves my daughter but she goes out to work and she had to be left longer on her own than she does at home. I am at home all day and only parted if I am going somewhere that dogs are not allowed or the occassional night out. Could all this be stress related or just season problems or even a combination. I will be having her spayed after her next season and next year she is coming on hols with us, so hopefully not having the stress again.
Thanks for your reply, I will try giving her her yoghurt at bed time as you recommend. She has always had her ball stuffed with small bonios on going to bed but maybe this is not enough.
Hello
We have a Staff who had the same sort of strange rumblings in his tummy in the mornings, it literally sounded like a washing machine!! He also wouldnt eat in the mornings but had no other ailments. We put it down to him eating DIRT! from the garden as his poo's would have so much grass and shrubbery in them.
Thankfully this only lasted a couple of weeks until he realised dirt was very good for him!!!
Hope this helps.
my dog does this, as does my mum's dog. first thing on some mornings they wake up (usually earlier than normal) with an extremely loud stomach, they then demand to go outside where they will spend ages eating grass. they refuse to eat their food for a while, and then later that morning everything is back to normal and they start to eat again.
both dogs were prone to stomach upsets when they were younger and often had mucous in their poo, but they don't have this now.
when one of them wakes up like this i usually give them a dog biscuit (a kind that they will eat no matter how poorly they feel) and it usually passes quicker
