We just bought a 4month old gsd who is nervous over strangers she doesnt bark but just wont go to them were taking her to socialisation classes on Sunday after her injection. Is this going to be a life problem or would we be able to get her out of it.

It's quite normal for most dogs to go through a phase at this age - and GSD's tend to be more wary than some others.  It's important when socialising however, that there is no force/bribary involved and that the dog is simply ignored if it doesn't want to interact, but rewarded if it makes the decision to approach a stranger.  Lifetime problems come when a dogs reluctance is rewarded by the owner inadvertently rewarding the behaviour, with perhaps a 'reassuring' pat, and gentle words :(

All my GSDs have been just the opposite & if bred & reared correctly there should be no suspicion of strangers. It could well be that the breeder of your puppy did not socialize them properly before you got the puppy

Thank goodness the breed standard was changed to take out the "noted suspicious of strangers"which was added to cover up the poor temperaments that were the norm in the 40's to 60's

You need to work on your dogs socialization if you have guests visiting tell them to totally ignore the puppy & if you allow treats or biscuits get them to hold them in their hands palm up & fingers out streatched as you would a horse & to still ignore the dog Eventually the puppy will associate strangers/visitors with nice things & treats. You might have a lot of work on your hands & please don's allow anyone to force themselves on your dog as that will cause more problems

GSDs are no different from any other dog temperament wise & they should be out going & friendly. In the words of one of the best German GSD breeders & judges Alfred Hahn"There is no such thing as a too friendly GSD"

Hi, agree totally with digger. Do not, whatever you do reinforce this nervous behaviour, take it from one who knows. I have had shepherds now for more years than I care to remember and they can be a shy breed. It is really best to get them at 8 weeks for bonding and confidence but that doesn't help you now. Socialisation is the best cure and the more exposure to different things the better, ie, busy streets, loud noises, lots of people and other animals. Also, a nervous shepherd is a liability as it is unpredictable and can turn into a "fear biter" and display its insecurity in aggresive behaviour. This is the last thing that you or your dog want or need, as people are generally wary of shepherds anyway. Keep socialising EVERY DAY and within a year of your hard work it will have paid off,

Good Luck ;)
