Topic Dog Boards / Health / Advice re; worms

I have a 20mth old tibetan terrier.
Every morning I clean up the garden & dispose of his No 2's, this morning I noticed it had small white grains in it, about 3mm's long.
He was only wormed 20th Sept using Milbemax, I worm him every 3 months.(also Frontline him)
I have been to the vets this afternoon for more Milbemax, the nurse stated from what I described they are tapeworm eggs probably contracted after his walks from licking his paws clean.
I don't know much about worms, in my dog book it states-tapeworms are carried by fleas-the dog eats the fleas & starts the tapeworm cycle.
He has had the tablet this afternoon.
Could they be round worms? whats the difference?
How are they passed on?
Also, when he next poo's will the tapeworm/round worm come out?

Hiya
You may consider taking a faecal sample into your vets for analysis;  that way they can determine precisely what infestation your dog has and prescribe accordingly as not all medication covers all types of worm and the various stages of development thereof.  This is something that I do routinely - prefering to ignore the regular postcard from my vet saying that my dog is due for his next dose of Drontal or whatever!  IMHO we pump too many unnecessary chemicals into our animals, but by testing at least you only pump in those that are required.  Indeed, you may find your dog has no need for worming at all on some occasions!  :-)

Thanks for replying-I am basically concerned for my dogs health, I will contact my vets tomorrow.

I have also seen this and often wondered about it, I have also spoken to other dog owners who have also seen it. I worm my two regularly with drontal plus.

roundworms look like long peices of string or spagetti.  what you are seeing sounds like tape worm segments.  a vet wormer will kill of any worms he has at present but will not stop him from picking up more.  he could go out tommorrow and get reinfested.  worming every 3 months stops the worms from getting established in the gut and causing problems, have a look here for more info

I have to worm my dog about every 2 months roughly. He seems to pick up worms quite easily. He hasnt got fleas, doesnt eat poo or anything. Yet gets infested quite regular. He gets this rumbling in his belly when he gets them, and smelly farts  at first I just thought his tummy was a bit off, then he poo'd them out one day. It was disgusting picking them up. I ended up burning them in the garden bin

So thats his little notification that he has worms. :)
