- By Lucy [ca] Date 19.10.04 19:19 UTC
My bitch is 5 and a 1/2 weeks from being bred, I am trying to detect little heartbeats with a stethascope, has anyone tried this, and at what age did you hear little heart beats.

Hi my vet says its usually around the 7th - 8th week when you can hear the heartbeats clearly if you listen to mums heartbeat you will then know if your hearing the whelps there heartbeats will be twice that of there mother.

Lucy I think it depends on the breed how quickly you can hear. I have used a stethoscope very successfully from 40 days in whelp. I have heard people with larger breeds saying it was a lot further into the pregnancy that they could hear.
