Topic Dog Boards / Health / Recent Bloat and torsion, how to feed?
- By doglvr [gb] Date 20.10.04 23:32 UTC
I have a Neapolitan Mastiff girl where not long ago she almost died... I am happy to say she pulled through her emergency surgery for bloat and a 360 degree torsion...
My problem now is she is on tinned or soaked food for life.... she is not gaining any weight, and very thin (vets say to have patience)
Everytime I try and feed her soaked biscuit she has major diarreah, tinned food seems to go down ok, but still no weight gain. She is on 4-5 small feeds per day. Still she appears to be starving (would eat my right arm if given half the chance... :-)
Has anyone had a dog survive from this? How did you go about feeding after?

Many thanks in advance...

hi Suzanne, sorry to hear about your girl it must have been awful.  I once looked after a FCR who had recovered from bloat, he was on 4 meals a day and was hand fed the special tinned stuff from the vets (sorry cant remember the exact name probably science diet though) he looked great but then he never was a skinny lad

Goodluck with it though :)

thanks Blondebird88, Yes Shyla was on a prescription diet from the vets to start, but it is mainly water in ingredients and was told to put her onto reg tinned food.... which she seems fine on most of the time... vets also mentioned to try soaked puppy food to try and gain weight, but it is just so hard on her tummy...
Poor girl is up at the vets tomorrow as she has to have xrays to see if she has done her crucient (however you spell that?)ligament.. so possibly will be going in for surgery yet again.. just my luck, will be glad when 2004 is OVER :-(
