Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Horrendous noise in car

My 10 month old Lab has started making the most terrible, yapping & howling noise while in the car. I know it is due to excitment as he knows it's time for a walk and I have tried going on different routes to confuse him. Any ideas please? I work from home & if I drive to a walk, he gets more time out and I do not need to be out for too long.

Both  my 7 year old lab and my 3 year iold one are terrible in the car despite trying everything.on the other hand my 2 staffy pups love the car and we've taken them to cornwall, over 7 hours travelling and they were like little angels!!sorry i cant be more helpful!!I think its is juts excitement but they are very noisy too!!

As soon as he starts making the noise, stop the car!!  Keep this up for a few weeks and he'll soon discover that making a noise stops him getting to the walk.........

Alternatively, take him out in the car more often - several times a day if possible - but NEVER for a walk, always come straight home again, so he unlearns that car rides = something exciting...

Tara started barking when we went to the vet's :) How she knew that we were going there I don't know :) Fortunately it's a short drive and we don't go there very often now :) How does she know ? I thought that it was because she was alone with me in the car - but I do go to other places with just her in the car. I think that she is in love with the vet :D

My dogs come in the car with me for all sorts of trips - they never know which one will be a walk until quite close to the location. They never quite know if I am going to the store, to the Post Office, to a friend, to pick the children up so they are never quite able to anticipate. We've travelled long distances with the dogs in the car and they are very well behaved. More trips in the car for different things and not necessarily for a walk would be a good idea.

Just a thought, but do you have the radio on? And I take it the dogs are in the back? (Most car speakers are in the back)
It could be that due to acute sense of hearing that he picking up sounds we can't hear
And singing along. our dog was the same until we sussed it .
