Took Sam out for the day which involved a 2 hour car journey and noticed he was drooling quite a lot but I'm quite concerned now as there are actually puddles of drool on the floor. Its seems to be running out of him I've never encountered anything like this before, although he is happy enough. Any thoughts?

My bitch drools when she is in the car. I mean loads not just the odd bit, and she doesn't really like the car - despite the fact that she has been in the car from 8 weeks old. Sometimes she is better and sometimes for no real reason she is worse.
Do you think it is motion sickness?

Good to hear from you Patricia. My OH did think it could be stress but we have been home for 4 hours now and it is still running out of him.BTW he doesn't really like the car in fact today is the first time he hasn't been sick on a long journey. He is 8 months old.

Right so he is still quite young - well my bitch only reacts when she is in the car, we don't have a continuation of the drool when we get home. She jumps out of the car and all is forgiven/forgotten.
How much is he drooling, and is this the norm - i.e. four hour after the journery? or is this the longest journey you have done with the dog?

Hi Patricia. He is used to short journeys in the car and then a walk,he hasn't had such a long journey since we got him.He is a messy dog and does drool a bit but this was excessive I had to change his bedding and there were puddles of it on the floor. I thought we would need to call vet I checked on him at 5 this morning and I had to change his bedding again he was still drooling but not as much and this morning thank goodness he seems much better.Has anyone any ideas as to what caused this.

Have you looked at his teeth?
As digger has suggested this might coincide with teething. My bitch can make quite a mess in the car but as I've said it stops once she is out of the car. It has got better as she has got older.
Make sure the dog has plenty of water. Has he had a bone to chew lately, and if so check his mouth to make sure a piece has not lodged somewhere (just an outside chance).
How is the dog now?

Sam is back to normal now.We have looked at his teeth but can't find anything wrong there. He's had a short car journey today and was fine we are now just wondering whether it could have been stress. It certainly stressed us out!

Perhaps gradually increasing the lenght of the journey will help him cope with long journeys - glad to hear that sam is back on form.

Thanks for your helpful advice Patricia.Sam is happy enough but he has started to drool again by no means as much as yesterday. If he's no better tomorrow I might get the vet to check him out I'll let you know what happens.

My goldie drools an awful lot on long car journeys. When she was a pup she used to get terribly car sick, which meant we had to gradulally introduce her to the car, and get her used to short journeys. Shes fine on short journeys but on longer journeys she drools a lot so must still feel sick. (but she hasn't been sick for ages.) THe way i look at it is that i am fine on short journeys but long car journeys can make me feel car sick too.
Look forward to hearing how Sam's visit to the vet went.

Hi Patricia.
Well Sam is absolutely fine now so we decided not to take him to the vet.We will mention what happened next time we visit but we think it could have been motion sickness or perhaps stress. Our other dog was fine. Sam did have an upset tummy last week so maybe that could have been a factor too.
We do need to increase the length of our journeys though to get him used to the car.
Ange
That great news that he is okay. It might have all been a bit too much for him so increasing the lenghts of journeys would be a good idea.

Weve just got back from a four hour journey from Northumberland and Jade our 16 month old Standard Poodle drools all the way home ,so much so, that she soaks the whole of the car blanket, herself and us! She starts to drool as soon as she sees the car even before she gets in it, but as soon as she gets out she is fine. I think its stress as she doesn't like the car very much ,unlike our other dog who just goes to sleep.I suppose they are only like us humans, some are car sick and some aren't. We are hoping that she will eventually get used to travelling, in the meantime we will just have to wear macs and duck when she shakes her head !!!!
