In the future i am going to try and have a litter with my Dogue De Bordeaux. Next month she is going to be hip scored. Could anyone offer any advice as to what other health checks i should be getting done.

Because of the rarity of the breed in this country I would say test for everything, hips, elbows and eyes. Their hip BMS is 25. They are not on the list for eye testing because by and large they do not have a problem but remember, one affected dog in a numerically small breed would have far more effect. Think about it this way, one affected out of two is 50% whereas 1 affected out of 1000 is .1% I have no details about their elbows but would not take the chance and would test anyway for the same reason as eyes.

Regards, John

Also contact the breed club which should also be able to advise
on what health checks should be done.

But Johns list is a good start.

I have Dogue de Bordeaux's with my bitch that I bred this year I had her hips hearts elbows and thyroids's done, as well as there eyes once a year. There are so many litters that are born without health checks that there will be a lot of problems in years to come, I am just pleased to know that mine will not be included for the want of trying.
