- By ManxPat [im] Date 13.10.04 18:09 UTC
Hi Mattie

Any particular breed? and why to the Isle of Wight - seems strange
- By mattie [gb] Date 13.10.04 18:45 UTC
The reason is that a lot of rescue dogs are being shipped there from ireland as well I am slightly worried as to whats happening to them.also some weeks ago I heard of some more being shppied there so any news would be gratefully received

will see what I can find out - though this type of thing is usually very covert. Will speak to doggy people in Ireland

Can't understand why would Irish dogs be transported to the Ilse of Wight? It can't have many homes available......
Did I imagine it or was there recently a programme on tv about rescuing dogs from Ireland? Did anyone see it? What was that about?

No you didn't imagine it, there was a programme last monday, inside out (South), about a guy who rescues dogs from ireland who were destined to be PTS and ships them over to the south of england to be re homed here. He has re mortgaged his home to make the trip every week. All above board. Don't know about the isle of wight, can't really see the point, probably less homes there. Perhaps the stories got confused?

I heard it was isle of wight and thats three times now so made me wonder where does the man live who mortgaged his house?
- By Polly [gb] Date 13.10.04 21:45 UTC
His web site is www.ashanimalrescue.com The man is called Remi and he is doing some good work there. I don't know about the Isle of Wight connection though. I have sent an email to ask him if he knows about the connection, between dogs and the Isle of Wight. He was featured on BBC's Inside Out programme, I thought I hadn't imagined it! Hopefully he will get back to us on this.

Remi is very nice he is dedicated Ive heard of him
- By Polly [gb] Date 13.10.04 21:54 UTC
I hope you all go and have a look at Remi's web site, the poor matted Irish water spaniel, I couldn't make out what she was to start with! I'm sure if he knows anything he'd be willing to help Mattie.

But didn't they say he got £200 for every dog he shipped over, and he brought 60 dogs every weekend?  I'd be dedicated at that too! :-D, in fact where do I sign up?

(this is what my boyfriend said they said, as I was in the kitchen at the time and missed that bit and I refused to believe it, but he is adamant that that's what they said)>

As Remi brings over rescue dogs, he will never in a million years receive £200 per dog.  He brought over my old rescue from Ireland, along with a number of other old, long term stayers in Irish rescues, and certainly wasn't paid.  There are thankfully still people out there who do good deeds for no financial gain to themselves.

Sorry i dont intend to go of this thread, but i know of a couple of working dogs in my area that have been stolen, my local police seem to think that they have been stolen to order and will end up in Ireland as it is the shooting season or was when these dogs went. now im wondering if once these dogs are no longer needed are they put in rescue or PTS. or do they end up being shipped to the Iske of white, Ive just looked at the mans web site, now thinking of doing a sponsered walk or something to try and help out,
- By Polly [gb] Date 14.10.04 10:00 UTC
I suspect it is quite possible they are stolen to order. Where they end up though is another question. As to doing a sponsored walk or something, I'm sure any animal charity is always pleased to get some support.

I got this email from Helena who helps Remi today. Hopefully it will clear up some of the rumours going around. As to the £200 if he does charge that, then I can see what he is spending it on, I looked at his site, some of the rescued dogs have been so badly neglected they need a lot of care before they can leave his rescue centre in Eire.

The email:-
Dear Polly,

Please do spread the word about the dire situation in Ireland, alongside our website you
may to have a look at and mention www.irishanimals.com

A number of different groups are using this excelent site which is owned by a lady
called Denise Cox.

We know about dogs going the the Isle of Wright, some of them came from Ash, some
were transported by Ash. Others came through other groups that are doing what we are
doing, try to save as many as possible from destruction.

My site is not always fully up to date, time is a factor, obviously caring for the animals
comes first, so usually we would have more dogs here than you see on the site.

Hope to hear from you again soon, Helena

Hi

I watched the programme about dogs from ireland, as some have already said these dogs are being re-homed in the south of England.  I know nothing of these dogs being sent to the isle of wight and I live here.  Usually the smallest of news will be in our local county press. We only have one rspca site here on the island, which I am going to this week. They are situated in godshill and I will ask to see if they know anything about it.  I dont think that these dogs were being sent here, there seem to be enough unwanted dogs here already, and it being such a small island most people that live here with any concern for dogs would know about it. Will keep you posted if I find out anything.
