Topic Dog Boards / General / Dino's reprieve!
- By carene [gb] Date 16.10.04 15:46 UTC
I'm sure you've all seen the news that Dino has made legal history in  having his death sentence overturned - but at what cost to his family....the legal battle has cost them approx £60,000 and they have had to downsize to a smaller house. I feel they deserve this favourable result for their tremendous dedication - how amazing to hear of such committment, when we so oftern hear of pets being neglected and cast off. :) :) :).

I was thinking the same, It's nice to hear that they love the dog enough to do what they did.  show there are dog lovers out there who will do anything, and i mean anything for their pets...its a nice outcome I think for the owners :)

I'm just so amazed that it's gone this far. After all, anyone with two brain-cells to rub together knows that if you put your hands near scrapping dogs you're likely to get bitten. I mean, how stupid and vindictive can you get?

ahh but you dont know the full story I can fully understand owners who try to save pets they love .I would! the person who was irrisponsible for there agressive dog  of lead at the time should have been the one who was in trouble .

To be quite honest lovelylady, i think the gent in question has been punished enough.  If a grown adult decides to dive in between two dogs fighting without taking precautions for their own safety, quite frankly they deserve to get bitten.

Everyone who has any common sense knows that when two dogs fight they don't care whats around them and will go for anything it see's.  most people don't bat an eyelid...just afew do!

so your saying the owner of the other dog is to blame and shouldent try to save his or her dog .ah ok then

The full story was retold in court, and there was a video played which showed Dino out walking and meeting strange dogs and in his own garden unrestricted in anyway with one of Roger Mugfords dogs, he didn't show any aggressive tendency what so ever. The video clearly showed he was no more of a risk than any dog you might meet out on the street. He had never shown any aggressive tendency before the incident and has not since.

I've been following the story with interest and was so pleased for them that he has been saved as for some people that have said 'how disgraceful to spend that money on a dog' Its their money, their choice.
Its a shame it had to go on that long I believe he's been on death row for 3 years.

Good for Dino and his owners is what I say!

So if DINO showed no aggression to dogs then why did he attack this particular one? (or do you mean after the treatment??) And why does he have to wear a mussel for the rest of his life when out side?
Very interesting story, its good the owner has taken the time and money to train the dog out of it. They must love him very much. But at the end of the day, the incident shouldnt have happened in the first palce.

I had a very dark BC that was attacked by several dogs unprovoked, however many dogs do not like dark dogs & even one of my cavaliers that was hurt by an Airedale reacts badly to any he sees. Basically no one actually knows why some dogs attack others, but that owner of the other dog tried to break up the fight using her hands at the dogs heads end & got nipped in error. there is  thread somewhere on here about stopping dogs fights & wading in with your hands is asking to get bitten.

It only takes a growl under the breath from a dog on lead to spark off a usually under control dog to lose it & attack the on lead dog. Roger M used to have a very grumpy dog that would threaten other dogs & he used this dog under very controlled circumstances to test dogs reactions-I presume he still uses this method to test dogs

Dino will be muzzled because the court instructed the owner to do this

Incidently Dino was never actually on Death row as such as he was allowed to remain at home & not locked up in "prison"conditions, the owners however never knew if before the appeal was heard the police would come & collect him & have him killed

The facts are the case should not have been brought under the DDA with the mandatory death sentence asked for, the court had the opportunity in view of the fact that the actual bite was not a simple dog bites woman case but two dogs fight & one owner  puts hands into the business end & gets nipped.

I actually saw a near miss dog fight in the ring at Driffield today - the breed cavaliers ! one of the gentlest breeds around but in the dog class there were two dogs that came with in inches of a serious fight ! as both dogs were on leads they were fortunately easily separated

Harry(?)Bates lost everything his job, his house etc for his dog who had done nothing, other than be a crossbreed that was obviously part Great Danes & in his car(a public place!!!!!!!!). His dog had bitten no one or dog, threatened no one or dog & yes he got him back in a black bin liner left on his doorstep by the police after he was killed!

I think the problem was that the owner of the other dog put his finger in the way when trying to separate the dogs :( so frankly i feel it was his/her fault!  At the court, a video was shown of Dino behaving and mixing very well with Roger Mugford's dogs in a very normal way. Maybe it was the other dog which attacked Dino although not sure on that.

I don't think anyone really knew what happened or how it started. Having said that my rescue spaniel gets on well with all the dogs he meets, except for one which approached him in a dominant way, now when ever he sees this lab he will bark at it and if it responds he will growl and not back down unless I call him off. It may have been a long running battle between the dogs or a one off sudden incident.
I think most dog lovers are aware that it could so easily happen to them and their dogs, and can empathise with the family for wanting to keep Dino no matter what.

Well said Polly.  Just like us people dont like everyone we cant expect our dogs to like every single dog they meet.  My older BC has a problem with a teenager BC through no fault of the other dog's or his own they just dont like each other.  Every other dog we meet he loves and plays with but this one he just hates.  After all dogs are not robots thank god!

Another thing in much the same vein, which I see so often and makes me cross, are dog owners walking by busy roads with their dogs on extending leads or off the lead altogether. They always say things like "OH he is never on the lead he just walks beside me, he has never run off" or "He never runs off, and if he did I have control because he is on the extending lead".

It only takes one incident to cause an accident. A few seconds and they could have a dead dog and maybe have injured someone. These dogs only need to see a cat or friend across the road and they'd not think about the traffic, they'd just go! The sad thing is these owners think their dog won't, and if it did run into the road, they'd not be able to react fast enough to prevent an accident.
