Hi,my male dog has started to do an awful lot of howling. He has had a check up and is fine.He sleeps outside with his female companion(spayed)and has always slept outside in the run.But over the last week he is constantly howling and whining through most of the night and during the day too,He seems almost restless and cannot sit for too long without a little whine.Has anyone any advice to share with me,as he is usually so quiet and i just feel helpless as to what to do.
Do you have a bitch in season in your area?????

Not sure if there is a bitch in season but could find out, would this make him do that?(god will it last untill a bitch has finished her season)I know in my street there are no bitches but there are a few further round. He is only just three and he has loads of bedding and a wall to wall carpeted kennel inside his run also the run has a roof.
It's worth find out if there is a bitch in season - my dogs howl occasionally but this is usually during a very good dream they are having. Seems odd that he has just started to do this. What action do you take when he howls?

For the first few days i cuddled him then became worried so off he went for a check up (nothing physically wrong with him)I tried ignoring him but even the people from next door have asked whats wrong as they never hear him make a noise at all (except for in the morning when he is let out of his run,he sings then(he is a husky)or if a cat or horse go by the back garden)Last night though he got told firmly to button it,which worked for about four hours. Then after his walk he is at it again. The vet did mention about a bitch being in season but as mine is spayed i didn't think much of it as most of the dogs in our street are male.Could he sense a bitch is in season from round the corner,Please tell me it won't happen every time?how come he has never noticed any bitches before? If this is the case i think he will have to be snipped i can't go through this every time he can sense a season(does anyone know of the distance a male can sense a bitch)and niether can he its just pitiful

Dogs can scent bitches in season over a mile away! Maybe there's a new bitch moved into your neighbourhood?

Over a mile a way thats amazing really, but as he is just three does this mean he is just turning into an adult as in our last house the people over the back of us had a bitch who was not spayed and he never noticed when she was in season he was never near her when she was in season but we never had this howling when she was.If this is the reason will he howl like this everytime he sniffs a bitch in season?
How old is he? My dog started doing this recently too, we found it was for attention (which he got lol), and after a cuddle and some extra bedding, he has settled down now. I think he was not liking the change in weather?
I think he could scent a bitch from around the corner - perhaps there is a new bitch or someone is walking a bitch in season near your house. Has your dog ever mated with another dog?

Not too my knowledge,he has never mated a bitch while i have had him, but i only got him at about 12 months old.
I can't help but think there is a bitch in season nearby, perhaps you should ask around. Not only is this driving you mad it must be driving the neighbours mad as well.
Hi , What breed is you dog? I have bassets and the breed is known for being vocal especially young Adults, mine will howl at the slightest sound and if there is a bitch at the hight of her season any where in the village i know about it !! Houndgirl

Hi,
I have 2 bitches in full season at the moment ,must admit my entire males are well behaved and dont bark or howl.Obviously they are well separated but they can still see the other 2, maybe because their used to being around bitches although the boys have lost thir appetite alittle but that normal for them when the bitches are in season they pant a little more buts that it but then again I think generally Goldens are very good and from talking to many others with entire male Goldens they don't seem to have some of the problem other breed seem too.

In my experience have never known a quiet Husky! They sing a LOT, sometimes for hours on end. Would doubt there was anything to start it, he is just being a Husky. of course if he lived indoors, I would think he stop a lot of it, especially if he had human company.

Well my husky is very quiet except for this last week,he sing good morning or at people who come to the house but is not vocal just for the fun of it like many huskies niether is my other husky, she only makes a noise if she has to be left on her own.He only sleeps out side in his run(he is only in there when i am in my bed or if i have to go out for a long period) and is in the house allday with me,so thats not his problem,

Hi,he is a siberian husky.Have found out there is an akita bitch in season so this must be the reason.I just could not understand it as he has never reacted like this before. But have decided the time is right to take him to the vets as its not fair to anyone(him,me or the people in the street)to go through this every time he gets a whiff of a bitch on heat.Just hope this will stop him. Thanks everyone
Hi
If you mean by taking him to the vet's that you are going to have him castrated this may not prevent him howling as it does not always take the urge (or the ability to mate) away from all dogs.
Maybe you could ask your vet to administer a Tardak injection (a drug which simulates the effects of castration) and see if this makes a difference?
Hi
I am not sure that castration will solve the problem - there is no guarantee. Indeed I know castrated dogs who are only too anxious to mate if allowed !!!! Perhpas you can take him indoors - is this possible?

He does come in all day but is still howling,it has not been too bad this morning but he's been out for a good run.I just thought that having him castrated would solve the problem but i will speak to the vet about the injection some one mentioned and see what he says is best.Maybe he has just worked out he is a husky and decided he is supposed to howl a lot.
